bringing her to life

I have an old tractor, that was my father in laws prior to passing that I would like to see if it can be revived. It has been sitting a long time and I am not sure of
its condition, except he did tell me that is pops out of gear. My first quest is to see if it rotates. The battery was from 2006, I installed a new one, but nothing. I
am not sure what is good as it had been farmerized (rigged) for many years. cut wires, new wires, twisted together wires, etc. First question is, where to get a wrench
on it to try and rotate it. Looks like the whole front shroud needs to come off, Is that accurate. Thanks, Don

The loader might block access, but the timing hole is in the right (right and left are based on sitting in the operator's seat) side of the torque tube near the mating flange to the motor. You can reach the ring gear teeth through that hole and pry on the ring gear with a screwdriver to try turning it. You might be able to get at the shaft for front pump (for the loader) to try turning it.

The serial number will be found on the left side of the torque tube flange.

Jumping out of third gear is common for those. When shifting people didn't wait for the gears to stop turning and wore the corners of them.

It appears it is 12 volt, given the ballast resistor in the primary wire to the coil. Does it have a generator or an alternator?

First make sure its in neutral then you can use your hands push on the fan belt with one hand to keep it tight and try to turn the fan with your other hand. The engine should rotate easily. You may want to wear gloves to do this. Other option is a pry bar through the starter hole though not easily done on that tractor.

(quoted from post at 12:23:31 07/25/22) alternator seems to be the only part except the battery that is not original

Appears to be a Delco type, one wire. So, it is most likely it has been converted to negative ground.

I see it has a can over the exhaust, that's good, but it still could be stuck. A good thing to do in any case is to remove the spark plugs and put a good amount of ATF in each cylinder. Don't put them back until it turns over a few times. It may take some soaking to free it up. Also removing the valvae cover and check to see if all the valves are free before trying to turn it is a good thing to do do.

I always put the plugs back in and then pour as much ATF down the exhaust as I can till it leaks some place. That way the exhaust valves get ATF on them and the cylinder with the exhaust valve open get even more ATF in them

In any case, it is best to first carefully loosen the drain plugs (engine, hydraulic, power director, and transmission/differential) until they drip and see if you get water from any. I would pull the plugs, give each cylinder a shot of penetrating oil, and try turning it over manually, before dumping it full of ATF or anything else. Find out if it is stuck first.

My next chore is the starter. Getting it out was a pain as it was rusted into the hole. the starter engages and spins but solenoid is bad. The solenoid on it is farmer rigged like everything else. I would like to make sure the new one is proper. I do not know which model I have, maybe a D15? Starter bolt was on the right hand side. Any ideas? Thanks, Don

I posted last Monday where you will find the model and serial number, including a picture.

Yes, thanks, I didnt see that until after my last trip up.
Its about 90 miles away. I will have to look next trip
up. Don

AC used that same type of starter mounting on several models, so that doesn't mean much. Looks like a D14 or D15. You may need to do some sanding to find the numbers, and they may not be legible.
