How is the best way to fix broken cast. It the muffler bracket on the top radiator casting of a JD 620

find a compentant welding shop and they can weld it with nickel rod.im an aws certified welder and have welded cast iron several times

I've welded one with plain old 6011 rod, believe it or not. Hit a low door with the 630 and broke the casting way back sometime in the late seventies. Being inexperienced, I just couldn't get nickel to work, so out of desperation I used 6011 with an AC welder,no pre-heating, I just welded away, and it's been holding ever since. Remember, there's a gas tank in that area. Jim

I've welded my 630 there - twice. Bought the tractor as a rollover, and it was already broken.

Backed under a low door and broke it again, but not in the same place. I used stainless steel rods - 308-16 I think was the number.

Neighbor borrowed it and broke it again. . .

We're kinda thick headed in this neighborhood.

The whole radiator comes off pretty easily. Four bolts up through the bottom, if I remember right

Most tractors are made of cast steel. You can check it by taking a grinder to it and if it throws sparks you can weld it.6011 or 7018 and other rods will work.Nickel is not necessary.I like to heat it up with a torch if its a long weld,it also helps to clean it off if its real greasy or something.Bolt it together or what ever you need to do to get it like it needs to be,grind a V in it,tack it to hold it in place, weld it an inch at a time, grind the slag off, peen with a pointed chipping hammer, weld another inch.Dont stop until you are done.If it cracks beside your weld, grind a v in the crack and weld again. If its a long weld, heat it up with a torch as you weld and when you finish so it cools a little slower. You dont want it real hot like glowing, but kind of hot,way hotter than you would want to touch.Probably wouldnt even need to do anything if it was a weld say 2 inches long, except weld it.

Weld it with NiRod or braze it. It may be easier to braze an exhaust part... Depends on what's actually left to work with and how thick it is. Sometimes thin cast like manifolds will just go poof when you touch it with a rod but brazing may save it...

Good day Sir,
You asked the question "what is the best way to repair cast iron"? I would have to say for your situation I woud braze. DO NOT ARC WELD YOUR CASTING!!!!! UNLESS YOU CAN HEAT IT TO 1800 DEGREES. When arc welding cast iron you are attempting to fusion weld it and fusion welding of cast iron requires it to be at the proper temp. Brazing is different, you are not trying to melt the base metal. And just so that you are properly informed, yellow brass or low fuming bronze has a tinsel strength of 65000 psi. and grey iron has a tinsel strength of between 20000 and 40000 psi. So if you prepare the surfaces and if necessary pre-heat properly you will have a part that is as strong as new. If you would like to call me I will be glad to assist you in any way I can. If you could send me a picture that would surely help. Please take a minute to visit my web site.
Thank you
