Broken inching pedal

My neighbor just sent me a text saying he broke of the inching pedal on his 4000. Is it a big job to replace the broken shaft??

Assuming it broke at the location of the groove for the o-ring, I'm going to speculate that it *might* come out without splitting the
tractor. The problem will be getting the new one in. If you drove out the bushing from the case, you *might* be able to put the new shaft
through the hole in the case on an angle and then drive the bushing back in from the outside over the shaft.

Having never done this before myself, I guess you'll find out if it's possible. If it's not, you'll be splitting it in the back and removing some of
the rear components, not a bad job unless you've got some ungainly loader on this tractor or something similar.

If I were a betting man I'd say it's not going to happen, as the boss in the case is 1 inch long, about the same length as the bushing. These dimensions are from a 1965-up case. Let us know how this comes out - I'm curious myself.

Thanks Bern for the great pic. My neighbor has thee worst luck with tractors lately. He's the same neighbor that broke his SOS cable a while back but he was able to weld the end back on so it works sort of. He also has 841 loader backhoe with stuck badly clutch and two Fordsons that have there issues. too.

Similar inching pedal shaft setup in both, but is it a 3 or 4 cylinder 4000? The S-O-S design changed quite a bit with the 3 cylinder models.

3 cylinder... I think it's a 65-67... Louvered hood anyway

The 3 cylinder inching pedal is separate from the shaft. The end of the pedal has a round loop that slides over the shaft and is held in place to the shaft with a roll pin. Hopefully only the roll pin broke, which can be replaced easily without going inside the transmission. If the shaft itself broke, then what Bern said about the 4 cylinder S-O-S applies, you may or may not need to split it to replace.

I was referring to the 3-cylinder version, note I mentioned that I was taking measurements on a 1965-up case. Also, the inching pedal is separate from the shaft in the 4-cylinder models as well, ref numbers 15 & 35.

I just did the same thing on mine. I was able to easily remove the old one, however getting the new one in was a challenge. It will not fit straight in, I ended up grinding it down on an angle to get it started, and used a magnet to pull it through. I have the roll pin back in to hold the pedal, and i figure a small tack weld will hold it even better, but i have had no issues

Thanks Sony...I have turned a 1/2" shaft with oring groove for my neighbor. He's still working on getting the broken part out.
