Brush hog lubricant?

I have a Diamond J Cutter brush hog with an Italian made Comer gearbox on it. I pulled the level plug on it the other day and it appeared to have some old grease in there but I wasn't sure. I tried putting some gear oil in it and it just poured out the bottom. Is it supposed to have grease or oil? My guess is oil since it has the level plug half way up the gearbox and a fill plug at the top, I figure the seal went out so someone put some grease in it instead of repairing it

when the seals get leaky an old farmer might pump it half fool of grease than fill it up the rest with 90wt. it gets the grass cut

Yep.. and while some gearboxes are actually designed for a light pourable grease like a 00# grease.. it would still have a seal.

You are probably onthe right track.. hog with a bad seal with a box filled with grease.

Well I was at the Home Depot yesterday and picked up a tube of grease so I think I'm going the lazy farmer route for now. The gearbox is smooth and quiet and it mows great. Mowing season is getting too close now to deal with it now. Sounds like a fall/winter project. Thanks for the input guys

Obviously the shaft seal has failed.

It is not uncommon for folks to use grease in a gearbox in similar situations, and any grease is better than no lubricant but most grease has no EP additives and do not provide good wear protection for hardened gears and bearings.

CNH EP lubricant is much thicker than 90W and will not leak out of many gearboxes that will not hold 90W. It is pourable but not inexpensive. I use it in the gearbox of one of my rotary cutters.

This one is leaking pretty good. I kept thinking it shoud be full then I looked underneath and it was pouring out!
