Brush hog oil.

I have an old brush hog, maybe 20 years old. I was towing it behind my N, for a while and the N needed a break. I just checked the oild resivor on the hog and it seems to be pretty dry, there is grim in there, but no oil to speak of.

I have 90w gl1 gear oil, or I can run down to napa and get a different type what does it take.

In shredder gear boxes I always use 90w gear oil. The only time I did not is in a Danuser digger because they call for grease instead.

I kinda like 85/140.. but 90w, 80w90, 75w90 is all better than nothing.

if the seals leak, then pump in some NLGI 00# grease.. like jd cornhead grease.. or marine lower end lube.. etc..

Jasper:

Most likely it was designed for 90W (85W90) but if this leaks past the seals use CNH 9821006.

Marine outdrive lube. Not a bad idea Soundguy. Every year I change my lower unit oil and it looks like brand new. Maybe I'll save some and put it to use in the hog.

My dad knocked out the lower seal in an old "Mowhawk" brush cutter over 20 years ago by winding up a wad of fence wire. I couldn't get the hub to come loose from the shaft to get to the seal, so we have been pumping "Red-Tac" (thick)grease in there ever since with no ill-effects. I suspect that the grease absorbs more power than the oil did, but since it is a 4-foot mower, it doesn't cause problems.
