i bought a 5 ft.brush hog last week .i checked gear box and it is full of some kind of lube.i thought i would change it any idea of what to put back in.thanks for help.

Bruce i don't no if this is recommended but i put in 90 or 80 weight gear oil in. i would like to hear what others have to say

Gear boxes used on rotary cutters use GL-5 (EP) 90W or 85W140W.

If the seals leak a small amount you can use CNH high EP lube (cannot remember part number but have it somewhere).

DO NOT use chassis lube.

Hi Dean i was just curious if you mounted the dual wheel spacers or just keeping them becuase you can.

Trac:

I've cleaned and painted them but have not yet used them.

I plan to use them on my 64 4000 S-O-S when I swap in the 192 CI industrial engine that I have for it, but this may be awhile yet as I plan to overhaul the S-O-S at the same time and cannot start any major projects at this time.

I still need to round up another set of rims, centers and tires to use.

Most of these gear boxes call for a GL-5 gear lube. . Last time I looked there were like 80W90 and 80W140 gear lubes out there and either of these will work if they are API GL-5 gear lubes.

Seem to remember some recent (relatively) discussions of "corn grease" used in leaky PS units and gear boxes. Could be mistaken though, am sure real brains will recall better.

I put John Deere "Corn Head Grease" in my leaking Ford rotary cutter gear box and it has been fine for over a year. As a side note though, it is only used a few times a year for 6-8 hours at a time so it is not a heavy use item. If it were, I would replace the seals or gear box if necessary. Might try Craigslist for cheap replacement parts like a good cutter with a rusted out deck to steal the gear box from. I Will be using mine in a few weeks if I can fix the hydraulic leak on the lower right side of me 3000!
