Bug causing threads not to show as read

This is of course a massive deal to people reading the forums. The changes I put in to try and meet the "who is replying to who" issue that classic was known for, also called the "Threaded View" on here, is causing this. No new post that doesn't appear at the bottom of a thread, will mark the thread as read. Thank @john in la for discovering this. As soon as I can, I will get it fixed. It's priority one, and I am aware it's really causing grief.

This must only happen in "Threaded View"?

I've never encountered it.

That's correct. The software was intended to be used without my Threaded View. As a result, with Threaded View unchecked, new posts always appear at the bottom and things work as they are supposed to work.

I'm 95% there using a new "brainstorm" that has brewed up after learning exactly how this happens. I'm testing now on a different system just for that. When it works I will unceremoniously install it which I think will clear up a massive amount of confusion over what is read and what is not, even for moved threads.

I'm horrified that this happened because it's caused so much confusion in an already traumatic transition for people.

Glad you found the reason for the flaw Chris.
I posted a reply to double07 in the test forum this morning trying to figure it out but like you I never could duplicate the problem even though I kept seeing the problem over and over in the forum.
I see now you have figured out a 3rd party has to get involved and post a reply to a reply for the classic view not to pick up the post was read by you.

I think I have it fixed now but still testing. It won't fix threads that have not been marked, will only start showing correctly after one more trip into the thread. Thanks again on that.

This problem is fixed. Unfortunately, if you haven't read a thread recently that is showing as unread, you would have to read it once more to have your view of it show as read. I will post a separate thread to try and catch people's attention since this relates so much to people's confusion in using the new system.

I'm still getting posts showing as unread. Not all but some.

I haven't seen that since the fix went in unless I use the back arrow of the browser to go back to the forum thread list or I had not returned to read the (not) unread thread. If you use the browser back arrow, then you have to press the refresh on the browser to get the current information. Have you verified by going into the thread that is shown as unread again, then clicking on the name in the "breadcrumb" (e.g., like Forums > Miscellaneous > Site Comments). If I do that, that thread stops showing as unread (unless someone snuck a new post in between reading the thread and when the forum thread list displays again.

If you are using that method of navigation and still seeing a thread that won't get unstuck from being read, let me know what the thread is so I can look at it. The original issue was that the forums were not designed to have New posts go into the middle of the thread as they do with our Threaded View. Only the last post was checked to see if it was new. I corrected that condition, but if you've found a new one, I need to look at it.

Here's one. It has stayed flagged new. I have checked it several times yesterday and today. Before and after the last post. The 4020 thread.

I always use the phone back button. Haven't seen any breadcrumbs to try another way.

The phone back button is just like the back arrow on a normal browser. It doesn't update the page you go back to so it's identical to how it was when you last left it. That's okay if you refresh once going back so you get the most current version of the page. It's designed that way in a browser to save the bandwidth of asking the server for a fresh copy of the page, very useful on static pages that never change, but problematic on pages that provide dynamic navigation information.

I found a couple threads on the John Deere forum doing the same thing. I got to playing with them since it went away yesterday on the other thread. What I found was if you stopped after reading the last post and went back the new icon stayed. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where it stops and then go back the new icon goes away. Hope this helps.

It will do that in all cases if you use the browser back button. If that is how you are returning to the thread list, you have to click the refresh to have the current status of a thread show up. This is normal web behavior since it caches locally on your phone the thread list just as it was before reading the thread.

As far as going to the bottom, the browser doesn't send a status back to be able to mark it to my knowledge but there may be some interaction I don't know about. I would need to know what the actual thread it's happening on to research.

But the back arrow will always cause it not to show as read. The way around this is to use the breadcrumb link up toward the left corner of the phone screen, like to get back to Site Comments when reading a Site Comments thread, use this method and see if the thread shows as read:

On the issue you found in JD, I went through the top 20 threads and none showed any problem with the read highlight. I did this by reading the thread then clicking John Deere in the breadcrumb link. On the longer ones, I clicked on them then immediately clicked on the John Deere link so as not to read down the page. It still marked them as read. Is it possible that you are hitting back arrow some of the time?

One other thought on this. If the specific thread had been read prior to when I got the fix in on Saturday, even though you had read it before, it still would not have been shown as read. This was a caveat I mentioned above toward the top of this thread. Once the thread was read again, then the old bug would go away.

I always hit the back arrow on the phone. There are no breadcrumbs on it.

Finally saw the breadcrumb but it's almost at the bottom of the page. It works that way or by swiping one more time and hitting the back button. I know what to do now. Thanks.
