building a 60

iam thinking about building a pulling tractor out of either my g or 60. Ive been told to build the 60 because it will be cheaper. Iam goig to have triple g in ny do all the machine work. He told me to bore block .125 over new al pistons, do a good vavle job, have cam ground and run a lp intake/exhaust manifold. I will have to mess with carb or send it out. He told me this will make a strong puller and really wake this 60 up. what can i expect for hp? has anyone else built one like this and are you happy with it? iam going to start tearing it apart soon.

you should be happy. Im running a 60 built by him with 6-1/8" alum pistons in a powerblock, and everything else on you list.

The G is a much better choice...If you have one bored any ways and buy pistons then most definately the G, I don't know how much Trip G wants but from this website they offer G .125 over pistons for under $420. Put those in and mill your head .250, buy a nice cam grind, depending on what you want the tractor to run like is who you have grind your cam. Murphys and Dengler are a little more money but you get what you pay for they have the knowledge that other people dont have. The reason you should choose the G is they are so much bigger on the Engine side to begin with and weigh basically the same as the 60, the only benefit to a 60 is the two barrel carb and since your only building a practical size engine you don't need a two barrel just a nice opened open big nut G carb..If you want your carb opened up i have a # for a guy who will do it cheaper then Roberts and have had good results

what can i expect for hp out of the g without a flat head. if i bore it .125 and mill head, grind cam. the other reason i was going to build 60 is because motor only blows 90psi its tired so i figured if i had to ring it i would just bore it out to. bob the owner of triple g is good with the cam grinding...he knows his stuff, so iam told.iam not sure which one to build now

I'll second what DiamondPuller says. Your 60 with 90psi will already pull in 1st gear, no problem. It sounds like you are going after 2nd gear, which is the same ground speed and about the same gear reduction as 1st gear in the G. The stock G motor has almost 100 cubes on the 60 to start with (413 vs. 321). To put it in perspective, the G even has more cubic inches than a 60 with a power block.

I pulled a 60 for a lot of years, but always used 1st gear. Mine is bored .090 over, head shaved a little but nothing too crazy. Power all day long for 1st gear, even at an idle in heavier classes like 8000lb. Not worth a darn in 2nd though, even on a soft track at 6000lb. I stopped pulling it several years ago because it was outclassed by higher horsepower tractors that carry more ground speed.

You should easily see 60 hp with a stock cam if not more. My cousin has one with stock head(not milled) and .125 over pistons, nice big nut stock carb and it is 59. I have never used trip G cams or heard anything about them, its up to you...A dengler cam is 425 and murphys is 350ish and they know there stuff. You can try the trip G and its probabaly a good one...also you can either buy roller rockers which with the things i have told you to do add another 10 to 15% hp automatically by adding more lift on your valves, just ordered a set for my 300 cube unstyled B and they should be here thursday, on A's we have gained as much as 6 hp with them.

whatever i end up building i will do the cam too. triple g gets $255 to grind my cam.he has alot of different profiles, he says to grind them for torque not rpms. what would you run for a intake/exhaust manifold on the g. i have seen johnson cold manifolds on ebay are they any good?

Yeah they are both good, dont be afraid to do some grinding in them. but if you do make sure that you match the ports size going from manifold to head. Depending on how much you are going to pay on ebay you might be better off to just buy one from murphys brand new for 275.

I have been running a 45 A and triple G did all the work and I got all my parts from him. He treated me very fair and I love what my A will do. He milled the head and bored the block to .125 also did the cam. I think you will be happy with his work.

if all your gonna do is moderately build, the G is a better choice. Better ground speed, and will pull fine with same kinda mods you were speaking of doing to the 60. Hell if you put rings in the 60, and a valve job, you already gotta low gear puller that will be competitive in farm classes. I ran a G back in the late 90's with .125 pistons, .300 off the head and intake work done, stock F900R cam, electronic ignition.. and was a factor most everywhere in the low gear 6000 lb class
