Building a bear-proof box

Bears are wicked clever.A little ice cream and hamburger stand here had a bear that would get into the dumpster. The varmint proof plastic lids are for racoons, not hungry bears. When the girl that closed the place at 10:00 PM went out there after closing, she always saw the bear waiting. Then the owner went to a steel lid with latches. That slowed the bear down for a few days, until he came up with a plan. When she flipped the lid open that bear ran out and jumped in,while she was dumping the trash. After that she tried throwing a little something on the ground next to the dumpster. That worked,he only wanted a treat,so he was happy with that instead of thrashing the dumpster. That little 16 year old high school girl said the bear had no interest in her,and wasn't afraid of him.(or her)About 10 years ago I had a bear rip the door open on my Model A Roadster and take my box of fresh honey dip doughnuts. He ran about 300 feet, stopped behind my shop, leaned against my well, and ate them, box and all.

I laughed out loud. Hope he didn't tear up your Model A too much. In Shenandoah National Park they have steel boxes at overnight campsites I think for campers to store their food. Trash is supposed to be packed out, they don't have trash cans at the campsites. The big dumpsters in other areas are pretty elaborate with some kind of latch or maybe padlocked until they're emptied. I forget exactly what. It's not your typical dumpster, that's for sure.

To add to the discussion, here’s a company that makes “certified grizzly-proof” boxes. The one pictured sells for $433. Not especially big and doesn’t look like the kind of box meant to be kept outdoors permanently. Unless it’s anchored to something solid a bear could easily drag it around.

On the other hand, a lot of bears thought the joke was very funny.
Sure, the big bad bears always think it's funny Buck. Just like the big bad bullies in grade school who gang up and taunt their overweight classmates. Happened years ago quite a bit, hopefully not so much anymore but it probably still does. Somehow I can imagine you being one of the big bad bears from years ago. Maybe you still are, I have no idea.

Yes, you have no idea.
