Building an A puller

I have a slant dash JD A I am thinking about making into a puller. Any and all thoughts would be great. One question is would a JD A be better than a Farmall Super C for pulling?

I'm sure a Superior C would be cheaper! Probably win more too. Unless you spring for a 800 cu A . Which Josh or JD B can fix you up with. LOL Vic

I am not sure about the complete rules but I am mostly interested in a farm stock type pull. Or even a classic tractor pull.So you think I should get a copy of the rule book before starting a build and choose the best tractor that will compliment the rules?

Unless you want to spend large dollars that series of A tractor has a very fast first gear. You will be powering out soon on most tracks. A later A with the lower first gear will get you a decent pulling tractor without breaking the bank. It takes horsepower to go faster. Mike

As the others have stated, your tractor has a fast first gear. If you are stuck on your tractor you can always install a first reduction gear and clutch drive pulley from a single stick A tractor to slow it down.

Parts should be cheap for you. You can install M&W style pistons and a cylinder head off a 60 with the 60 carb and LP manifolds and have a very peppy tractor that could still be used for farm use. If you want more power you can install some higher compression pistons and stroke the crank if you really want to spend money. The problem with this is that the tractor can really no longer be used for farming applications.
