Buliding a Puller

As I sit here and watch it snow, I have been thinking of building something MM into a puller to compete locally at tractor shows and the local fairs. Nothing super fancy or $$.

I know that there are unlimited options as long as the $$ is as well!!

I either want to build a ub or a 670.

Does anyone have any simple designation of what will fit where?

I know that a 403 crank will go into a U but will the entire 403 bolt into a UB or a 670? Why spend all that time and money putting a 403 crank together with 336 jugs when you can just use the whole 403?

Right now the only fancy thing I have is a set of 4233 heads that I may use.

I guess what I am looking for is what bolts and fits where?

If you wanted to pull NATPA with a 403 in a U you would have to pull in Division 5 and you wouldn't have the engine for that. In NATPA divisions 1 through 4 you have to have the original crankcase with no external differences for that model.

Michael, I thought you couldn't use the 403 jugs on a U in any division up to IV. Rule 10 in Div III and IV says that the tractor must have the stock engine or the manufacturer's replacement for the make and model of the tractor being pulled. Have I misinterpreted this rule? I just spent a lot of money trying to abide by the rule and still get some muscle.

I think it's 800 jugs or heads that put you into 5. The g jugs look the same as 800 jugs except for the water manifold holes.... But I don't know if you can run the g jugs on a u in lower divisions ??? Guess you could just tell those Deere guys that you got some of those power blocks haha !

The U and the 403 use diffrent jugs the 403 is 1" longer and 4 5/8 bore this is super apperant as with stock valve covers the caps will stick through the hood the blocks themselfs are the same on the u and 403 besides casting numbers the 403 crank will go right into the U giving you 1" more stroke you will then need to find rods to use the stock U pistons I belive that Massy 44 rods now for the jugs an M5 or any of the newer tractors will be 4 5/8 and the corect higth to appear stock(er) also the diesel parts can be used a Massy 97 has the right jugs too. as far as heads all should work somewhere there is a list of what will work best you also need to watch deck higth you may need to get copper head gaskets and fire rings or use a second base gasket to make sure you have clearance

Piston pin size in both are 1-1/4" Rule 13 of NATPA says ,"No increased height in any tractors (ie: deck plates, shims, girdles) except for stock gaskets." To me, if you install a 403 or use the 403 jugs, essentually you're increasing the deck height for a U tractor. Does this sound logical to y'all?
