Buried Amp or Volt Gauge

The amp or volt gauge on my Super C is buried all the way to the right, or max
Charge even when the tractor is shut off and the button is pushed in. I recently
converted it to 12 volt and it worked fine the first time I used it. Thanks for any help.

Then you need to replace it since that means it is bad

Your 30 amp ammeter pegged out once you started it and you have a 60 or larger amp alternator ?? Just a thought.

If the tractor restarts, and there is no smoking wires, the gauge needs to be replaced with a 60 amp rated gauge. Jim

I don't understand this amp gauge problem. Our H has the original amp gauge with an alternator the gauge pegs for a minute then drops back to about 20 amps then drops back as it charges with no gauge issues in that 20 years. The gauge is shot and needs replaced. You could put a higher amp gauge in if you want but I don't see a need for it. Unless you are drainning it down pretty hard stating the tractor. We do run a 31 Grp battery in our H. Stud top of course.

I don’t think we will be able to understand his problem unless he gives us more details about the amp range, history and quality of the ammeter. He may be experiencing an alternator that is drawing his battery down. Left his tractor set a couple weeks. It then had enough voltage to crank the engine but the voltage was low in the battery. So the VR cranked up the charge rate and poofed his weak component.

If the needle stays does not return to center, when the engine is shut off, you need to replace the ammeter. If you shut the engine off and it went to discharge, it would indicate you have something like a voltage regulator cut out stuck, or lights on, causing a discharge, however you saying it stays at full charge means replace the ammeter.

I have four Minneapolis Molines with 30-0-30 ammeters that have alternators. They all work fine. They do as Cat Guy said--they peg for a minute when first starting the tractor, then drop back to normal.

Your ammeter has been operating in unfamiliar territory due to the high output of your alternator. I suspect it is stuck. I suggest you give the gauge box a sharp rap with the handle of a screw driver to see if you can unstick it. If successful, the gauge may work satisfactorily going forward. If not, I think you need to replace it.
