I really don't care

In over 3 decades, we've never used, or had, a burn barrel(shrug). Never needed one.

Pretty doggone pleased. Burned around 75lbs of baling twine, and empty feed sacks, from the entire Winter season

About 6" of ashes was all that was left. Very Cool.

Sorry about the shaky video................my good camera died.......using an old camera without video stabilization........is what it is.

Used to have burn barrels. I burned through them. I now use a 38 inch tractor rim supported off the ground about 4 inches. Will burn just about anything when it gets hot enough.

Cut both ends our and support it off the ground it will take on all comers.

Burn barrels are actually illegal in our state and you can be fined for using one. State law says all trash must be disposed of in a landfill. It does not say that you cannot burn it in a stove. I have an outdoor wood furnace. Lots of paper and cardboard gets put in it.

Here in NH when you go for a required permit for open fire of barrel it tells you very specifically what is allowed and what is not and what are the pertinent laws and the potential fines for breaking the laws. Until recently I was a long time member of our fire dept. Over the last twenty or so years there was a list of maybe 25 residents names compiled who could not get permits.

My wife retired as an insurance underwriter. She had a saying, " Never make a rule that you cannot or will not enforce" And that is what I think of your states burn barrel law. They have burn barrel inspectors driving around? In reality it is a way to charge you with a crime if you cause a wildfire or other damage by having one.

What is DEQ ? We obviously dont have one. We are so rural, that you can spot small fires daily, and in numerous locaations.

For you it would be the DNR........................

The laws here...........................

Click on "burning"

Lists the same exceptions as above.

The only time there would be an absolute ban, would be during county burn bans due to drought, and danger of wildfire.

I'm not crazy about the practice, but at present, it's our only alternative. They closed the local transfer station around the first of the year.

No burn barrel inspectors, but state conservation police (game wardens) they have more power than the state police and they do enforce littering laws and environmental laws. They also enforce open air burning laws and will write you a ticket in a heartbeat. I have a good friend that has that job.

Gene, you are exactly right. There are many laws that police never enforce, but when there is a serious crime or bodily injury, they will then write up everything possible and it is up to the prosecutors to decide what to continue with and what to forget.

Regardless whether legal or not, there are certain things you DON'T want to ever burn due to extremely toxic compounds being released that will harm your own health being anywhere near it. Anything with vinyl in it, such as PVC (PolyVinyl Chloride) releases dioxins which is toxic at microscopic levels, one of the most toxic substances on earth.
