Burned coil

Working on a Frankenstein tractor. 8N motor 9N rearend. PO
?upgraded? to a 12 volt system. Not sure if he did the coil.
What else would case it to melt like this?

oo much current for too long a time period. Even if 12v coil with proper ballasting, if you stall engine and leave oil powered, it will burn up. Running current is only about a quarter of stalled current.

Your coil melted due to incorrect wiring, not because it had a 12V coil. Dose it have the Front Mount distributor, OEM Ballast Resistor, a 6V or 12V battery, 1-Wire/3-Brush generator OR a 3-Wire/3-Brush generator OR a 12V alternator, a roundcan cutout if 9N, or a square Voltage Regulator if 8N generator? What system are you trying run on, 6V/POS GRN or 12V/NEG GRN? Specify the other components mentioned too.

As Jesse said......leaving the key on w/ the points closed. That's tip # 38.

Replace it w/ a 12v coil, i.e., one w/ 2.5 ohms or more of internal resistance. And the oem ballast resistor. As explained in tip # 30.

And don't leave the key on!

Question about the automotive ignition conversion. Would I need the OEM ballast resistor with the 12V ignition coil? If so which one I?ve seen two different styles one ceremic one looks like stainless steel.

Frank,Yes you do need the OEM ballast resister along with a new 12 volt coil.Also new points and condenser.

Yes, as Den and others said, a correct 12V switch over requires the OEM Ballast Resistor intact -see PICTOGRAMS. The white ceramic 1-OHM resistor isn't a replacement for the OEM Ballast Resistor and is used only if the front mount coil is a 6V unit. The OEM generator and Voltage Regulator get removed from the circuit when doing a 12V switch over as well.
