Hey everyone question about my rotary cutter and
could use some troubleshooting advice. I posted a
video of what?s happening. I have a Ford 8n with a
5ft hardee cutter. It ran fine for about half an hour or
so but then the shaft quit spinning so I lifted it up
and down a few times and then got out of the brush
and disconnected the pto. Spun it by hand and the
blades spin I don?t think there is any obstructions.
Please watch the video it will soon but it won?t spin
full throttle anymore. The pto seems fine and the
video shows me running it at 540 rpm.

I am new to running a bush hog thanks for any
advice.

How does the PTO shaft attach to the gearbox? Is there a shear bolt that is broken?

Matt, No video. I looked up 5 ft Hardee, and it appears that yours has no clutch, shear pin only. If you follow your PTO shaft backward towards the gear box, the shear pin would be just beyond the universal joint where the U-joint rear yoke fits over the shaft that goes into the gearbox. Look at the head of the bolt, and get replacements with the same markings on the head.

Matt, I should have added that sometimes despite a sheared pin, an implement will still turn with a very light load but with increased speed and/or load it will no longer turn the implement.

Thanks for posting. If you look under "classic view" you can see the video I uploaded. This model is older it does not have a shear pini but it does have a slip clutch.

As others have posted the ORC may be the problem. I asked this yesterday and I didn't see an answer: Did the PTO shaft between the tractor and cutter gearbox stop turning when you were in the grass? If it did, the issue is in the ORC or the tractor PTO -- the drive end of the system.

Worked on it this weekend. I took the roll pin out for the orc and jammed it back in but not all the way to make the orc a regular adapter. I know it s not safe this way but it helped me figure out it was the orc. Something must be wrong with the internals of it because I cut a couple acres down and everything was ok. Brand new orc is bad seems to be a consistent problem for me every new part I get has an issue. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions I am getting a new PTO shaft with a quick disconnect orc so hopefully that will be a permanent solution.
