Bushog driveshaft

I purchased my first tractor, an 8N. Then bought 5" bushog. Went to hook up but driveshaft bottoms out enclosed before my 3 pt. lines up. Can I cut driveshaft down so my pins will line up. I need about 4" to reach and then somemore I assume to give me adjustment. If I figure right, I will have to cut both ends to accomplish this. Lift arms are the standard approx 34" Any help from the pros would be appreciated. Thanks

if it's a lemon / triangle telescoping driveshaft or a box tube in a box tube yeah.. cut equal portions ( half each ) off the shafts. if it's a box into a round with a square hole.. be carefull.. that square hole end is only a couple inches deep and you can't cut it at that end.

Do you have an overriding coupler? It's a gadjet on the PTO output shaft that turns one way,but ratchets the other, thereby keeping the cutter from pushing the tractor after you want it to stop.It will be a +-4" diameter tube with an output shaft coming out of it.This is essential piece of equipment on any revolving piece of equipment you put behind the tractor. If you don't have one,get it before you do your cutting on your shaft.---lha

Yes it is the triangle shaped shaft. I just don't understand why I have to cut it off. The guy who had the bushog said he used 9N with bushog. I thought all this stuff was uniform. Just wanted to make sure I was not missing something. Thank you so much.

Ah so your down in the shake zone so to speak. Ya I'm up here in the Lake of the Ozarks area and have been since 1980 in July I will have lived in this area for 31 years

Great, sounds like nice area. Yea, I'm in the quake zone. I moved here when I was nine in 1966. Been in this area since. No place like home. lol I just bookmarked this site when I bought my old tractor and wanted to confirm year. Thought it would come in handy. I bought a 6V to 12V conversion kit from these people and installed. Works great. Now if I can just get to bushogging. Learning about this stuff as I go.

Don't feel bad. Way back when I was a kid in grade school the teacher asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up and I said be a farmer and he laughed at me and said I would never have to money to do so. Well my dad bought this 40 acre place and then gave it to me a few years ago because of his health he is gone now. But any how I now have 44 acres and have been hobby farming it since 1980 and have been learning since then when I got out of the Navy. I have way to many tractors for the land I have. Got something like around 30 on my place and my partner has about 15 so between the 2 of us we have a few extras

Thats what I knew I would like about this site. Guys with the experience and the "been though that". I am still a little confused. Soundguy said cut both ends, half each, but that is where I am confused. If I want to gain 4", I need to cut 4" off each end correct? Otherwise the end I only cut 2" off will bottom out. Am I thinking correctly? Thanks so much.

Well first off do you have the newer 3 sided PTO shaft or do you have the older square type. If you have the newer 3 sides stuff yes if you need the shorten the shaft you cut 2 inches off each for a total gain of 4 inches. That of course it just a starting point. But if you have the older square type you need to do a whole lot more since the one part will only have a piece about 4 inches long that has the square part and if you cut that you can end up with little or nothing to hold the torque of the tractor going to the hog. O know clear as mud right?? IF it would help send me an e-mail and I'll send you my phone number so as to help you better. I know some people understand better by talking to a person one on instead of reading it

Bob I'm with you, you need to cut 4 inches off both pieces if you want to shorten it 4 inches. Maybe the feller that used it on his 9n didn't have an overrun coupler so the shaft was the proper length for him.

Thanks for the reply. I am new to tractors and thought maybe I was overthinking the problem. I'll let everyone know how I come out. Thanks again. Bob

Is the bushog the rigid fixed hookup or the chain type that allows movement of the hookup?
If the latter you may be able to adjust the top link of the 3pt so every thing fits.

I called the guy I bought bushog from and he didnt use orc. That would be the difference. Got 2 straws with different od's and got it straight in my head. Just new at this and overthinking it. Thanks so much.
