busted driveshaft

Trying to bush hog my hunting property today and broke my tractor. Was going through some thick multi-floral roses and blackberry along with very high weeds in general. Having trouble keeping the bush hog, engine and tractor all going at the same time. Very thick stuff, then the tractor stopped, the bush hog stopped and the engine kept running. I believe that the drive shaft broke so that is where I will start. Any one have any better ideas?

reomack I would suspect the clutch as the Pto would still work if the pinion shaft coupling had broken.

I recently purchased a 1945 Ford 2-N.....Picture is before cleaning and inspection....note the DRIVE COUPLING...to the Rear Pinion..

you are probably right, as I smoked the clutch not much before the failure.

Does the brush hog have a shear pin/bolt? I d check that, I have sheared two on mine, super easy to replace
But don t replace with grade 8, replace with weak bolt on purpose.... this is the "fuse"...

Hog stopped at the same time the tractor stopped. No movement when the clutch was released and the tractor in gear

reomack,Looks like it is time to split it and replace the clutch,pressure plate ,throw out bearing,trans seal and pilot bearing and check flywheel.

Take the inspection cover off and look at the coupler and pinion. I broke a coupler once that took the pinion shaft with it. The coupler is a welded tubular assembly that can fail under hard load and it can take out the PTO and final drive at the same time.

Inspection cover removal is simple and it will then point you in the right direction.

Thanks to all of you for the input. My first job is to recover the tractor from my hunting camp so that I can work on it here at home. Then a little tear down to see what exactly the the issue is then repair then back to the camp to see what I can tear up next. BTW it is a mutt, 1948 with a 51 side mount engine. I have had it for a few years and aside from a necessary carb rebuild, I haven't had many issues. Guess my luck finally ran out.
