buying cable modem box

Had the same issue about 6 months ago--had kept my old TWC-supplied modem as long as I had my old XP box, but when that died, I went with a Motorola SURFboard SB6121. TWC has a list of tested modems on their website, and this was on the list and the reviews I read looked good. 80 bucks from Tiger Direct, and no problems switching it over--once I got the new computer up and running, I plugged it in, called TWC support and they switched it over at their end with minimal hassles. So far, so good--there's really probably very little difference between brands as long as you stay with something fairly common.

I bought a used Motorola off ebay for around $15. Very similar to the one time warner supplied me.

Used to be free and when they decided to start charging $10 a month, I bought one. The seller had hundreds of them.

Haven't had any real issues with it. I'm thinking we've had it for 4 years now.

You are lucky. Our scumbag cable operator requires/works with their $$$$ boxes only, simply an income generating scheme.

Go on there website. They will give you a list of modems that will work for you. Ebay is probably the cheapest place to get one. Got mine a couple years ago for about 10 bucks.

When my internet provided upgraded to 25Mbps, I bought an Arris CM820 DOCSIS 3.0 modem for $80 installed from my provider. It is working well with my Voice-Over-Internet (VOI) telephone. Check Amazon.com, TigerDirect.com, or NewEgg.com for prices and user's reviews. The local Best Buy is convenient, but is usually higher priced.

If you don't need DOCSIS 3.0 there are a lot of good used modems available on Ebay at low prices. Motorola modems have worked well for me: SB5101, SB5120.

(quoted from post at 21:43:27 12/11/15) I'm sick of renting TWC modem box. What is a good brand to buy. I saw a TP-LINK DOCSIS 3.0 for 455. Is that a good one. Thanks

I live in a rural area, no cable within 30 miles so no first hand info, but if you want to check buying some products, this is a good site to check. Some prices are expired, but there's discussion, better deals will have more thumbs up. You could also try searching for just cable modem, maybe not all list TWC.

Amazon reviews look decent overall, every product has failures.
