Buying Timber

Does anyone on the website knows who buys timber in the southerntier of ny near Olean? Looking to sell timber want large area clear cut.

Yes I do Schoonover is his name. He did ours last year I liked his style 60/40 split paid every friday. The only downside I could see was he sold the logs to a family members mill. My advice to you is to call all the local mills and have them BID on your timber. Don't forget to hemm and haw that will bring the price up.

"Large area clear cut" Any big stuff or mostly firewood?
You need a forester to manage the sale and work. They will cruise the timber and work up and estimate of the volume and value of the timber . Then they bid it out and lay out the requirements of the job. Then the forester oversees the cut to make sure it is in compliance with the contract Timber cutters will want to take the valuable stuff and leave the rest for you to deal with. You want them to post a bond that they will take ALL and clean up after the work. The forester I hired charged 14% . Unless the loggers are getting a lot more for the logs , I don't think a 60/40 split is that great.

I have dealt with a firm called Lewis Lumber Products in Northern PA. The fellas name was Mark Knapp. If I remember right, the website for info was lewislp.com.

Mr. Knapp, the forester I dealt with, provided a great deal of information, even telling me that one piece he would recommend getting someone else as they don't deal with small sections of pine.

Good and honest in my opinion.

Call your local DEC office. They will send a state forester or cooperating forester They will do a timer cruise of the property. They can also tell you the value of your woods. They will also give you names of good loggers.

Don't trust any of them. They are all a bunch of crooks from what I've seen around this area. Either cut till you practically stopped them at gun point or paid about half what it was worth. Or cut trees not in the deal from the start.

Try your local farm bureau office, they have buyers and can help measure your timber stand.

When they are bad, I agree, they turn my stomach as far as what they do. It's bad enough that one may need to log a place, it needs to be done, for money or otherwise, and I'm not talking the entire timber-logging-lumber industry as a whole, just those miserable slobs who do steal, make an awful mess and damage the existing trees while doing their work. I don't care if you are a logger or have another opinion, when they are bad they are the worst slobs in the woods one can imagine and have no reservations about what they do.

My father who I have to say is a lot different than I when it comes to hiring and matters like these, had them here many years ago, reason was a money crunch if I recall, and just like you say, I caught them across the property line and stopped them, they damaged a lot of our trees, they left a real mess, and they stole. They were looking to steal from all the surroundng landowners, caught em off the property several times. When I saw enough of this, and it was not even my place, I threw em off, and told them NEVER come here again, don't care if some other fool hires you nearby. To this day I'd still like to exhibit a lack of self control towards that miserable @ld codger, his family and anyone associated, you just don't let these kind on youer property if you have any respect for what you have, in this case a pristine untouched wood lot. I told him about D.E.C., marking out the trees, determining the value up front, would not listen. Someone stole a valuable a 3 foot dia. cherry, I hemmed and hawed, nothing doing, they did a lot of damage without any hesitation, on that note I'll leave it be, makes my blood boil. Down the road behind the local Agway, another guy did some logging and was the complete opposite, really nice honest job, live and learn, but like was said, make sure you know exactly what is to be taken and make darn sure it's followed under your terms or you'll end up with a mess and being ripped off. And no I don't want to argue or debate anyone about these people, when they are bad they are really bad, there is no doubt in my mind. Landowners need to be warned about these types.

Watch timber buyers . I sold some timber two years ago sold everything over 18". But they left alot of timber that could have been cut into 2"X4" and alot of other cuts. but timber they couldn't get a good price they just left . I still have some good timber & in 20 years can cut again .
