Dry and sooty sounds like too much fuel, but how about some history? First what machine/tractor(?) is this engine in? What have you done for maintenance, tune-up, etc. and how recently? Plug number? Air cleaner type and condition? How is the tractor being used/worked? Just putting around or working at PTO speed under a real load?Engine is not running properly. Pulled the spark plugs out and they are all dry black and real sooty
It’s in a 1957 INT 330 utility tractor I tuned it 10 years ago cap rotor cond. pts plugs and wires.Every year I plow my 1acre garden with a 2bottom plow and run a disc over it a couple of times and that’s about all.Due to health issues it sat for the past 2 years. This spring I drained all the fuel out of tank and carb. It wouldn’t start so I put pts in and gapped to.020 started right up and I plowed okay with it.10 days later I ran the disc over it and then noticed the problem. It has an oil bath air cleaner and it is good.It has a marvel carb on it. It’s still 6volt pos.Grd.system. It Came off a working farm and was worked to death but has been fine for my needs. Also seemed to smoke a little more than usual thanx JimDry and sooty sounds like too much fuel, but how about some history? I removed cup and shined light from top and all clear.I put cup back on and started engine and I put my hand over top of air cleaner inlet tube and no draw on my hand. I sprayed starting fluid over housing carb and hose intake manifold and could not get a change in rpm’sOil bath cleaners can be plugged above the cup. Also float level (or sinking fuel filled floats) can cause rich mixture.
One last thing is a rubber intake hose that has an internal flaw causing restriction. Jim
Did you clean the cup and put fresh oil in it?I removed cup and shined light from top and all clear.I put cup back on and started engine and I put my hand over top of air cleaner inlet tube and no draw on my hand. It would be a good time to check valve adjustment.Engine is not running properly. Pulled the spark plugs out and they are all dry black and real sooty
The tube down the center is always open. Because it is not a filtering agent, air to the engine comes out of the side of the top "tank" after passing through the metal mesh that surrounds that tube. Clogging is in the mesh. with all hoses hooked up there should be engine vacuum at the top of the pipe extending up from the hood. So my next step would be to remove complete filter housing and hose into carb and clean out?The tube down the center is always open. If the mesh looks like its passages are stuffed, yes that is the necessity. plugging the side outlet, and filling it with hot water and a quarter cup of dish soap . shake shake shake. Next if still nor=t satisfactory, use diesel fuel, Shake Shake Shake. then soap/rinse. The pain is often tremendous. JimSo my next step would be to remove complete filter housing and hose into carb and clean out?
