C153 Engine

I have a c153 engine on an old hay swather. I assume it is nearly the same as a c152/Farmall H engine. Correct? Would replacing this with a Farmall M engine be simple? Would most everything fit?

A C-153 is in no way related to a C-152.

A C-153 is a derivative of the C-113/123 etc. The C-153's are sleeveless while the C-152's are dry-sleeved.

I also believe that the C-153 is shorter than the C-152. Do you have any measurements?

A Farmall M engine is even bigger.

Why are you asking?

I bought a 55+year old IHC hay swather from my neighbor. It has been sitting about ten years. He said he always intended to swap some other engine into it and resurrect it. He says he quit using it because it was using way too much oil. He also said it was prone to overheating and that he had put a larger radiator on it.
No, I have no measurements.
Being sleeveless, is it almost impossible to rebuild this engine?

This site sells .040 over piston kits. It just depends how much you want to spend and how bad it is worn.
I purchased a Farmall 504 gas C153 last November. Researched parts before making the purchase, they are available.

No not impossible, I did one several years ago , had to get repair sleeves put in block to bring it back to standard. It was cheaper than trying to get a good block at the time. Those engines are orphans and some parts are available and some not so much but they are good little engines.

Do you remember other than sleeveless and pistons what you found unique and I assume difficult to find repair parts. I had a 504 at one time that could have used an overhaul and what I remember was at that time only one place made pistons for 504 and they did not have any. I thought many other Internall parts were shared with A,B,C,140,240,404 amount others. Parts books seemed to bear that out at that time.I think Zollner was the piston mfg. I believe others have entered the game or at least offer the same pistons sold by different vendors.

Blocks were few and far between, that’s why I got repair sleeves in the one I had , just didn’t have much choice and the guy wanted it fixed. Pistons, bearings, wear parts you can find. It’s a good little engine just costly to fix cause it’s an orphan, not a lot of them around. Yes Zollner made IH pistons , I got one of the last or the last set of overbore pistons available for an M from IH cause they were no longer available after I got that set
