I got my IH C28 sickle bar mower working-- mows pretty well but unfortunately I broke the pitman arm that I had put on it. I could make one but I would sort of prefer to get a new one from Case IH-- they can't find that model in their book. They can find a C22. Is that pitman arm the same or is there another mower that uses the same pitman arm?

I believe the C22 is a shorter pitman (30 1/2", whereas the one you need is 35 11/16"). The one for the C28 that you need is the same as the one for the #32, and a few other models I can't remember (probably the UF-28). Case IH used to have parts books for all these mowers available online, but a few years ago they purged their online parts books. The only older IH pitman style mower they have a parts book for now is the 22, which is probably why that's all your dealer can find. But the one you need is still available from CNH (and other places), just not listed in their online catalog. The C28 was so popular here in Canada, that the local dealer always keeps one hanging by their parts desk. If I remember, I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow on my way home and grab the part number

Just checked at the dealer because I was in there anyway. The ones they have are AI brand, not genuine Case. The AI part number for the C28 pitman is M22184 (or A-M22184). Usually AI uses the same part numbers as the original manufacturer part number, so Case might have it as M22184. But even if they can't get it from the Case warehouse, any dealer worth their salt should be able to order from AI (most dealers order from AI on a regular basis). Hopefully AI still offers it: They used to offer loads of aftermarket parts for all sorts of oddball equipment (you could still get new binder and combine canvases from them up unit a few years ago), but in recent months they've really dialed back on what they offer. Looks like the #16, #24, and #32 mowers also use that same pitman. Can't remember if I posted this before, but below are some links to suppliers of that pitman, as well as my (rather crude) drawing of the dimensions for the C28 pitman, and also of the ear on the fork that usually has to be trimmed back just a tad to not rub on the underside of the casting.

I don't know what it is about the C28 mowers that makes them want to break pitmans so much more often than any other mower we've had, but we always had to keep at least one spare around. I think it's just a case of it sitting a little lower to the ground and having that wacky flat-plate design that sometimes flexes and pries apart the pitman wood at the groove. The pitman on the C28 sits a little lower to the ground than on any Deere or NH mower we owned; you have to be really careful not to drop the mower too low or it can break on a ridge or lump in the ground. There's also the issue that almost all aftermarket forks for the ball socket end of IH mowers have the 'ears' sticking out a little too far, and they'll scrub on the underside of the casting occasionally if not trimmed back. This can cause them to release the ball socket when in-use, and then your pitman will almost certainly break as it's flying around not attached to the knife.

Also, check the bolts that bolt the stick onto the sickle end and bearing end. I assume that it sits outside and the stick will swell and shrink from time to time. Depending on how much I mow with my F28, I check them 2 or 3 times a season. I run lock nuts on mine and you would be surprised how loose they will get. I usually mow with my Super C in second gear and about 3/4 throttle.

I get the pittman stick from Webb Cutting for the new idea. Check to see if they have the for the ihc. they have it all slotted and holes predrilled. Way cheaper the the farm family home has For sale.
