Was the hand clutch that works the pto always on the same side of the tractor on the CA. It seems to me by pictures I have looked at on
the net that some were made with them on each side. Pictures are not that clear, though.

The PTO engages and disengages using the engine clutch, not the hand clutch. The hand clutch is in the right drive axle, lever is on the right side connected into the clutch, and disengages the drive to the right rear tire, allowing travel to stop while the PTO and hydraulics remain operational.

Those having levers on both sides may be brake levers, used on some early Cs and others. I don't think the CAs used brake levers.

I understood how it worked, but called it wrong. It seems like I see one lever on one side in one ad and one in others. I don't think
they had had brakes that late in the game.

Aren't the Ca like the wd & wd-45 where the hand clutch is just behind the PTO gears and stop all Movement to the transmission? I thought only Minneapolis-Moline used the Stop One Wheel thing? That Hand
clutch on the WD and WD_45 is a great design and was great for the combines and round baler and ect. Cleddy

If I see a picture of one with the hand clutch lever on the left, I believe the picture got flipped during posting/editing.

The hand clutch was on the right side. I suppose one could take the whole axle, clutch assembly and switch sides. Not sure how this would affect installing the brakes but I would bet both axle housings were the same on non clutch tractors as were the final drives. Maybe someone like Dr. Allis knows. The clutch would then release by pushing the lever forward then instead of pulling it to the rear. I'm not sure why one would want to do this.

I have a 1953 CA. The left axle housing has the same opening the right housing has where the hand clutch lever goes through. The pan under the seat or the floor board has an opening that can be punched out to access the opening in the left axle housing. I think I have also seen the hand clutch lever on the left side of some CAs. I don't see any reason why the axles and clutch couldn't changed to the left side.

The CA hand clutch was a dry clutch one wheel stop thingy of apparently poor design. Not at all like the rock solid one in the W series.

That would be kind of neat. If a guy had a lot of time you could make both sides with clutches and make a Track machine and steer with the drives. I have a C Farmall with missing wheels that I thought about putting some skid steer tracks on but didn't know how steering would go?? Probably will just get some more rims>

Years back someone here had his changed because his combine, I think it was a combine, was cutting on the opposite side.

CA had 3 versions of hand clutch.
1. None - rare. first year and maybe into 1952
2. Right - most common
3. Left - much less common than right side version

I found pictures on the net with the lever on either side. Using the steering arm on the left side as a reference, the photo was not flipped, so it is as you say--either way.
