ca wont turn over

went out to check on the ca. turned the key and pulled the starter rod and it turned over just fine. remembered the gas was turned off. turned it on went back to start and nothing. checked battery, it was fine, still showing 6.9 volts. just wondering if anybody has a clue as to what to check first.

Check and clean your battery posts. May also be the switch on the starter. Yank the rod harder.

Battery cable connection could be poor or where the cable ground or even the starter switch

what everyone else said battery connections and condition, starter switch may be gunked up, or rod seized hard to say not being there thats by best bet, after checking that you can always engage the starter manually.

A poor connection can be good one moment and bad the next

See if you have voltage at the starter. If not check all battery connections and especially the ground. I just had that problem with a WD-45. Had power at the switch. The switch was not making contact with the starter lug. Guess I had cleaned it too many times and it was worn down. Solution. Had a shop change lug to threaded bolt on starter and am going to a solenoid style starter.

I believe the CA has a Bendix style starter drive. It is not unheard of for the drive to jam against the flywheel ring gear and lock up. Check that engine turns freely. You can do this by grabbing fan blade, rocking tractor in 4th gear, or using crank. Crankshaft does not need to move far to confirm it will turn. If no turn, you can usually unlock it by turning engine backwards slightly. You can sometimes hear it unlock by a slight click. If you can't turn it backwards, loosen starter retaining bolts and move starter slightly. If this doesn't free up engine, you have more serious problems. If engine turns by hand, but starter doesn't function, then above recommendations regarding bad electric connections are probably spot on.

I know it doesn't seem possible but check the battery connections especially the ground! Check where the cables mount to the battery. You could try running a jumper cable from the battery + ( assuming it's + ground) to the starter housing to ground it. That would give you a good ground. Pull the starter and clean where it goes into the torque tube. Have you load tested the battery? I thought I had an OK battery but it was bad.

Cranks once, then won't crank 5 minutes later, happens regularly, not uncommon, the guys are telling you right.

Put the tractor in neutral. remove the switch from the starter. touch the battery cable end to the contact on the starter that the switch contacts. If it cranks, the switch is the problem, if it doesn't crank it is a battery and cable problem.

You can take the starter to a starter shop and have a threaded stud installed in place of the switch contact pad. Then you can install, with some wiring changes, a 6-volt relay type solenoid.

I just had that done to the starter on my WD-45. Never started so good.
