Having 'specialized' in Shermans for 5 or 6 years now, I've come to the opinion that Sherman probably introduced their 'Step-Down' version at the same time they started marketing the cable shift. I've only owned 6 and seen 5 others and all but 3 were cable shift. Vs 75% of the Step-UPS being lever shift in much greater numbers/availability, I'd guess that Sherman Bros sold the majority of their Step-Downs before the problems with the cables became evident.
I'd welcome some dissenting/or supportive info if anyone is aware of it.
