Also, I remember seeing somewhere that you can check the original style ammeter w/a magnet. Can anyone explain how to do this & what results are good/bad?? Thanks!

I need your email address. Place a magnet near the back of the meter. The needle should move.

Needle moves on my old meter, but meter stays at about negative 15. Magnet moves it only further negative, then goes back to -15.

Sorry, I did not look at modern view. Email with pictures sent. I have not tested this meter on a tractor. Needle moves with magnet. If you are
interested I will se if I can't test it more thoroughly,

sing a small magnet (3/16" dia) in handle of a pocket screwdriver, if I approach loop from top, needle moves one way and then if approached from bottom, it moves the other way. Always returns to center with magnet removed.

Thanks JMOR. Using a magnet just like you describe the needle doesn't move at all. It only moves if I use a much larger magnet. Guess that answers that question! Thanks again!
