I would leave it as-is unless he needs something to practice on and does not care about the result. An amateur repair could actually decrease the resale value instead of increasing it.

Check with the dealer, There might be a hidden unwritten warranty. I had a whole pu truch sanded down to bright metal because of pealing paint and there was a hidden warranty (no charge)

Oh, have him look into the DupliColor Paintshop premixed clear coat. Ready to spray. Just pour in the gun and go.
