Can my Ford 860 pull this?

I don't own a disc either, so I'm not sure which would be best after plowing and getting a garden area ready for the spring. This appears to be more of what my Dad would call a field cultivator than a chisel plow.

I pull a 7 shank cultivator with my 4000 (4 cyl) with 8" blades. I built it to cultivate sweet corn. I add two more shanks (fill in the rows) to break up fitted ground when preparing the seed bed.

If you use it as designed for cultivating fitted ground, it will pull it all day long. Just watch the depth.

It's a little on the light weight side. If you catch it on something you would likely break it before breaking the tractor.

As others have said if you use it as a cultivator it should have no trouble. Never seen one set up like that called a chisel. If you tried to sink it deep enough around here to say you are plow'n that thing looks like it would do a real quick come a part in a hurry.

As some one else said, I took two two row cultivators and made one small field cultivator for use'n in the garden on my 960 and unless I sink her real deep the old girl doesn't know it's back there.

I know local markets vary but with fewer and fewer tobacco growers around here I have bought around 10 standard issue ferguson and ford two row cultivators at auction the last 5 years for less than $100 each, most in the $50 range.

I sold a Fergie quacker just like that for a friend of mine about 2 weeks ago. Got $225 for it.
Your 860 would pull it easy but it is not a chisel plow. I have a 9 shank Ford built one and don't think much of it. The shanks trip back too easily and don't dig in. Yes it is a field cultivator. They are made to keep the weeds down in a fallow field = quack grass = quacker.
About the only thing I use mine for is raking up brush into piles. Sometimes scratch up the driveway to kill weeds and loosen the gravel then blade with a back blade.
If you could find a 2 row crop row cultivator like a Fergie or Dearborn with the spring type shanks it would do a pretty good job for tillage.
My cousin uses a Dearborn behind his 40 hp John Deere and it does a good job as a primary tillage tool on a garden that he plants every year. see pic.

My cousin makes a couple of passes - each set a bit deeper.
If he sinks it too far it will Stop his tractor.

similar one went for $250 at auction last month in great shape.
I considered it, but it looked a little light duty
for my hard clay, rocky ground,
which routinely pretzels C Tine 1 row cultivators,
unless you heavily reinforce the rear of the V.

That is a field cultivator and it is missing some very essential springs. Hard to replace them today. So far as an 860 would be totally bored pulling that. When we got our new 1950 8N we bought the Dearborn version of the field cultivator its identical and I still have it, designed to work with the 8N and it handled it very well.
