accident waiting to happen if the can isn't held firmly.

I agree. If you don’t hold the can in a death grip you risk the contents flying all over the place when the top breaks loose. I prefer cans that need a can opener.

I have two of the original Swing-A-Way manual openers (from St. Louis), and was looking for a replacement recently. Everything on store shelves seems to be the typical Chinese precision and robustness. I found a company (Sierra Valley) which is reproducing the original design in the U.S., and ordered one right away. It's as good or better than the originals, and they even offer repair parts for the originals. They're faster than an electric opener.

My first boss when I entered the screw machine business (Davenports) used to run can opener wheels in his previous job. Tough steel that would cut you just picking up a handful of parts.

We called them the "GI" can opener. Somewhat cumbersome but for a guy in the field trying to get a can of C rations opened, it was just the thing and could be carried in the trouser pocket and not be noticed.

I don't mean the opener that comes in C-rations. The one in a jack-knife is the one I was referring to.

It's been a long time since I had one in my hand, but the short blade looks like the jaws of the little opener. The handle in your picture would make simple work of using that opener I would think.

I believe it because I worked for a farmer 60 years ago. He kept a check on my progress at whatever I was doing. He always brought us Pepsi Cola in 12 ounce bottles. I saw him open several cases of Pepsis with his teeth.

I was kidding about that.
I've seen it done but wouldn't do it myself.
