Cannot remove draft control spring

I am continuing to break down my 8N to paint it in the spring and I cannot get the draft control spring removed. Obviously, I have removed the three bolts that hold the seat in place and the whole assembly slides out approximately 1/4-1/2" and stops. Everything seems free (side-to-side), but I simply cannot get the plunger out. Does the plunger have a threaded end (not the end that goes into the lift cover) and the assembly threads off? If so, what is the trick to threading it off? Or is it something else?

If I understand your question you are trying to get the big spring off? The end with the plunger is threaded into the knuckle where the pin goes through. I would tighten the three bolts back up and then if the knuckle is hard to turn (it may be) I used a torch to get it red hot and it came off easily. Someone else will chime in if I am wrong.

I'd put it back together and hope I didn;t bend the internal linkages. It can/should be painted with it still in place.BUT if you really have to take it off,the threaded end(where the rocker connects) should be heated with a rosebud torch and GENTLY twist it counter clockwise to unscrew it from the shaft.THEN you can procede to take out the 3 screws at the base and remove the spring and related parts. The shaft will stay connected. When putting back together, only make it tight enough that you can turn the spring by hand.HTH

Nope, that's not how it comes off. Unless you follow Mal(Pa)'s advice, you will bend/break the internal linkage trying to get it off.

Sometimes you can heat the threaded end w/ a Mapp torch & get it loose. Sometimes you can win the lottery if you buy a ticket. Plan on painting it in place or use a torch to get it off.

Yes the Tee end threads off. As others have said put the three bolts back in until you get the Tee off. The rusty thin part with the three bolt holes and large hole in the center is available from TISCO.

I got a new plate from CNH to replace the rusty one that I mentioned earlier. It came in a Tisco package so people have got to be buying them. And you really can't tell that it is rusted through until you get it apart.
