capping live hydraulic pump

Just picked up a Super W6TA diesel tractor as a future restoration project. Many of the existing hydraulic system components (hoses, valve, fittings, etc.) are not original and leaking badly. I would just remove all the existing plumbing and install two plugs at the pump manifold. Could this possibly damage the pump from lack of oil, if I run the tractor in a few shows and parades this summer? This will also buy me some time to find the right parts.

I think it would damage the pump as it is going to run dry and it would basically be "dead headed" You could by pass valves and go to reservoir and back to pump would be worth the cost of hoses, that you can probably use later anyway to save the pump.

You could run a hose from input to output using a few feet of hose. Filling this with Hytran fluid and then hooking it up will work as a temp solution. the pump will be under no pressure, so it should not heat the loop. Jim

Yes! it will ruin the pump and possibly the engine too. Either completely remove the pump,or loop a hose to and from the reservoir.Make a continous loop of uninterupted oil flow.BTW,a new pump is a thousand dollars.Take care of it.

Guys, thanks for the replys! I think I can scrape up enough hoses and parts to connect the pump input and output directly to the oil reservoir! When I get the original type christmas tree valve and have it all plumbed up as shown in the parts book, does that valve allow oil to circulate in and out of the pump when the valve is closed (in that middle neutral position)?
