Carb cleaner

What are people using to soak their tractor carbs in these days? I have a Farmall super h that runs good but needs constant choke.

i use what's called GUNK , from napa or bumper. it is not like it was years ago . i soak them overnight. its not as strong now.

Had an H doing same. I asked a real good older IH mechanic what was problem. Said trash but try this. Take air tube off at carb. Start tractor and open full throttle. Put a big rag around your hand and use it to instantly smother engine at carb. Said 99% of time it will suck the trash thru. Tried it and it worked.

It sat for several months and the bottom of the tank was really rusty and full of gunk. I got that all cleaned so now I want to clean the carb get it running good then I have to pull the live hydraulic pump and replace the seals. Distributor is pretty oily. I was told the new gunk carb soak is pretty poor compared to the older stuff. Thanks

I would try what wh recommended, it's easy and it's free!
You'll probably end up tearing it down but try that first, making sure the tractor is at full throttle.

Having to run with the choke on could also be a vacuum leak some where on the intake part of the manifold. If it were mine I'd take a quick look around for a hole or maybe the manifold has loosened up. I always start with the free possibilities first even though I'm rarely that lucky.

I will check the manifold and intakes for leaks and give those ideas a shot. Thank you
Yes, the easiest way to do that is to spray starting fluid or carb cleaner around the gasket surfaces at an idle and see if the engine speed momentarily increases. If it does, the gasket is bad and should get replaced.
Could pull the bowl drain off the carb to make sure you have good fuel flow too.

If the issue is rust and not varnish, just a through cleaning with what ever is handy will fix the problem. For the gummy residue of old gas or varnish, use varnish remover. Toluene and xylene are the most common but are toxic. You can tell if you use them in a closed up shop.
