Carb Cleaning Issue

While taking the carb (TSX 33) apart for a complete bath, I noticed there is a small spring that appears to place a load on the choke/flap so that the choke would not stay pulled open. Although you can manually move the choke in/out now, how imporant is this spring to have since it is broken and the screws that removed the choke "flap" will not come out?

Bigtee;
The spring you refer to, is indeed a choke return spring, and is very needed to keep the choke from staying closed. If the choke is left loose, to flop around, your carb will not function properly.
That spring will/should be in the carb. kit, but only in the comprehensive overhaul kits, that service the choke rod and parts. The kits that are for general cleaning, do NOT have those springs, as they do not service the choke area.
As for the little tiny screws, that hold in the choke plate.....Insure that you have a screwdriver that fits the slots, and will not slip out of the screw head. The rod and the choke plate, and screws are made of brass, and do not usually rust up. But under the screw head is a star washer, generally made of steel or???? other???, and they can get fairly coroded, making it hard to get them out. Some times if the washer gets that way, you may have to rap the handle of the driver while twisting, sort of like an impact wrench. DO NOT hit it too hard, or you will bend the brass choke rod, rendering it useless, and you will have to replace it.

Good luck and keep us updated on how it goes.
Just think of it as a learning sesson!!!!!! :lol:

Thanks for the help, but the screw was stripped by previous owner. I can only get one out.
Last resort is to get a new carb.

Don't buy a NEW carb., just yet. Get a set of small vice grips and try to get the screw out that way.
They make a set of vice grips that have long pointy jaws on them. That is what I have used many of times.
For what they are worth...those repop carb's are way over priced. JMHO
If nothing else drill the dang screw out!!!!! It is just soft brass and will drill out easy.
May have to replace the choke rod ....but makes more sence than forking out for a new carb.

YOUR CALL!!!
