I "accidently" picked the felt out of hole on the bottom and lost it. I was gonna leave it like that but read in the manual that dirt would be sucked in there and wreck engine...it thst true?

Yes. Replace the packing.

While it would not be as bad as running it with out an air cleaner it is still not good because yes it would tend to suck in dirt

no snark: so that's what that thing in the rebuild kit was! can you stuff it from the outside? no way I'm taking it apart again
