Carb Questions

Cleaning carb from 9N. Going to follow cleaning tips link from GB in MT.

But have couple other questions.
1) is there a gasket that the venturi seats to? see red arrow.
2) What should I soak this carb in to clean all the grit and grime off of it? Is okay to leave all needles and butterflys in while soaking?
3)On bottom of carb bowl, shouldn't there be some sort of cork insert instead of metal?

With today's "weak sister" carb cleaner brews I know of NOTHING that will clean it up well.

Wire brushing works as does blasting with ground walnut shell media.

There's a little sintered bronze filter in there, held in place by a steel washer.

uh? Bob.......ref #3, the sinstered bronze drain filter is in the bottom of the throat of the carb. NOT the bottom of the bowl. Thats a casting mark, notta drain. ......respectfully, Dell

Soak it in a solution of 1 cup of muratic acid mixed in 1 gallon of water. OK to leave jets in place but remove needles and butterflies. You need to replace the choke and throttle shaft seals so the butterflies have to come out anyway.

Attached is one of JMOR's photos from the carb cleaning link. I guess the reason I asked about #3 is this photo. Looks like cork, but as you said ... a sintered bronze insert.
I guess I should probably leave mine well enough alone? Mine looks so much different I had to investigate. thx, Bill

Think I answered my own question. In the master parts catalogue, it's P/N 9n-9694A, and it's called a strainer (carburetor lower body drain) - felt used with 9N 9692.
Not sure I want to fiddle with it. This thing should very very slowly drip gas ... right?

packet.......it drips gas when yer float valve don't turn off the gravity feed gas. ALWAYS turn yer under the tank fuel valve OFF when thru fer the day ...otherwize... you can gitt enuff gas to go UP the carb input and into open intake valve and cause HYDRAULIC LOCK and broken pistons and arms when yer starter motor cranks around.

Felt or sinstered bronze work the same way, let gasoline drain but NOT dusty air sucked into engine. In the days of before weed sprays, weeds were mechanically killed by shallow sweeps being pulled thru the dry dusty dirt.

In many cotton and tobacco farms, it was routine wintertime maintenance to rebuild dust worn engines. Which is WHY, the N-Engine with replaceable sleeves was popular. ......Dell

To clean out a carb and not have the smelly& caustic carb cleaner and works.I have an old crock pot&put dish soap and water,run on high until hot,then low overnight.Comes out clean,then spray it out with water,remove jets,etc,blow out with carb cleaner&air.---lha

Yep, I always turn off my gas when finished for the day. I think I"m going to leave that weep hole well enough alone. Interesting about the tobacco farms and rebuilds.

GOOD thinkin' on "leaving that weep hole alone."
Those are only there to insure fuel drain out of the choke, and air-horn area, in case of flooding. The early M/S TSX 33's used a felt disk in that hole to keep dirt and dust from entering, MOST of them have long since disappaited/or been removed.!!!
On the TSX 33's that do not have the disk in the hole, I use a used cotton, choke shaft, seal....cut in one side with sissors, then poke it into the hole for dust and debrie. If that retaining washer ever comes out, good possibility it will never go back in straight enough to stay put.....then ya have to pay $12.00 for the bronze sintered plug, to replace the washer and cotton!!!
Just letting you know, why/how that weep hole works.

I always seem to get a very slow drip of gas out of bottom of the bowl. Not enough that it puddles the barn floor, but it's always wet.
So it sounds like it's working like it should be.
Yeah, I saw that sintered bronze part online for $12 bucks. And began thinking I might just leave well enough alone. Thanks for the background info Gary!

I like that idea iha. I did the muratic acid bath last night and it did a decent job but still have some crud. Will give the crock pot a try to see if get the rest. thx, Bill

Another quick question. Any suggestions on how to get that throttle shaft bushing out? Havent' tried anything yet, but aside from prying on it, maybe easy-out? Possibly a tap threaded in couple threads and back it out that way?
