Carb Replacement for 1949 8N

Is there a modern replacement for the old style 8N carburetor? I have tried a new old style but continually have problems with sticking float, always out of adjustment. Just tired of all the needed adjustments to make it reliable. So many adjustments each time I use it not reliable. Is there a new modern type of carb that is set it and forget it? I use ethanol free fuel, Marval mystery oil in each tank, new tank, lines and filter new, always comes back to carb out of adjustment or sticking float.

I’ve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed. I think you have figured that out. If you do not have a local rebuild shop, give these guys a call for a quote & shipping info:

Automotive Manufacturers Inc
2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220

They do mail order work. They rebuild carbs, clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

Agreed that the OEM Marvel-Schebler carb is always the best way to go. A 'new' part will be junk 99.968% of the time. A OEM Zenith unit (NOT a Cheena made clone) would be 2nd choice but you must be doing something wrong. Which manual are you using to rebuild the carb with? Which carb kit are you using? I rebuild M/S carbs in my sleep, have done probably over 300 in my lifetime. None have had to be returned and rarely required minor tweaks after installation. Send me your M/S unit and I will rebuild it for you -my email is open.

By the way....you don't need to buy the RV alcohol-free gas sold today -that is a myth. Regular unleaded 10% ethanol works fine, just use it up often and keep fresh gas on hand when you use the tractor. You also do not need to buy any "snake-oil" product that claims to be a "lead additive" - no such thing - lead is outlawed in the USA. Finally, many other "snake-oil" products are out there. MMO is one. No 'mystery about it'. Most all these use plain old Mineral Spirits as their main ingredient. It's the same stuff 100% of charcoal lighter fluid, paint thinner, and Safe-T-Clean is used as. Mineral Spirits is an excellent cleaner and dissolver of grease, crud, and other debris AND won't harm an internal engine or hydraulic pump/system. You say I'm full of $h1t? Then I encourage you to do your own research simply by plugging in "MSDS" and the product name to see all the technical ingredients and safety issues regarding that product. The USA EPA demands it. Can't find an MSDS sheet for a product? Then they are hiding something. MMO was like that up until a few years ago. They claimed "proprietary info" and wouldn't disclose it. Bull shirt. Nothing 'secret' or 'proprietary' about it. Do those products work? Maybe, since their main ingredient contains mineral spirits but it's your tractor and your time and hard earned money so you can do whatever you want. Me? I just buy straight mineral spirits by the 5 GAL pail and use it for cleaning parts, washing paint, grease, & oil off my hands, and dissolving many other things like old sticky tape residue.

I have two 8n's and a JD MC. I haven't touched the carb adjustments on them in years. I use 10% alcohol fuel. All three of them have the original m/s carbs on them. If I needed something to do, I would get one of the new carbs and give it a try. As carbs go, you could not find a simpler design. If you have to adjust the main needle all the time, I would suspect dirty fuel.
