Carb soaking

Hi Dell I am not gonna be getting my motor together for a while or at least installed for starting and I just wonder if the carb should be soaking in good clean gas until I need to put it back on the engine??? Devious

NO GAS!!!it sits in gas 24/7/365,what use would it be to do that? carb soak is readily availible at O'reillys, Autozone, etc.Even hot soapy water works.---lha

OK I get it!!! Do not have a hissy fit. Soap and water is my go to fluid for keeping the carb viable. Thanks for the info. Devious in Humble Tx.

Devious you ole timer you crack me up, I love reading your post.
If you have 4 tractors now to fix up One $23 dollar can of Berryman Chem dip would go along way to clean your carberators and other small parts. this stuff works in a couple of hours or you can even let it sit overnight for really bad parts.
good luck Bart

Hey just call em like ya see um there whitle britches. Thanks there and again that is a nice red paint on yer tractor thingy. I hope mine comes out as nice, can t get no better. But I must tell ya I would move my bed out to yer shed there ifin it was me cause it looks so much gooder than my garage fer this kinda werk. Devious

Devious...
Take your carb apart as completely as you can.
If you aren't sure about doing that, post back and we can help you.
Put all of the parts in the basket that comes with something like Berryman's Carburetor Cleaner...a one gallon can for about 20 bucks.
Let the parts soak in there for a couple of days, I would recommend...longer that the one or two hours that are stated on the can.
Then, remove the basket and rinse the parts in water and wash with warm soapy water, rinse, dry and examine everything.
Post back for help.
There are also good tutorials on taking a Marvel Schebler carb apart and putting it back together.
Plenty of help here.

Hi Tom in Iowa I don t think I will be taking the carbs apart on the rebuilds I do until I see if theyare at fault or sumpin. They probably have the same running settings in them as they did when they were shut down etc and maybe just need some chance to get going again. I figure to try that first justa as I am the motor itself. Give it some good clean gas and a good path to the cylinders where the sparkies are and see what happens. I saurely will ask you again for your expertise if one of these plans go awry. Devious

An air compressor, and a rubber tipped blow gun is one of the best carb cleaning tools, be sure that you can blow thru all passages.

I would not soak it in water to just keep it viaable. sounds to me like you want to keep gaskets from drying out. I would drain all fuel out and leave it dry. If they have set for years without running with fuel in them, I would disassembe and clean the old fuel varnish out by any means that works. BUt if it going to be awhile before you install them I would noet soak in water all that time.IMHO.

I and GB in MT do a lot of carbs and if he answer he will tell you more then I will. Me I keep and have ketp on hand a can of Berrymans Chem dip. It is about the only thing you should soak a carb in other then some other brand of the same stuff. Water, gas, kero, diesel etc will not help much if any and may in fact cause you more problems then it will help. But I also rebuild 4 or 5 carbs a year most years if not more

In my reply,I was not talking about leaving a carb in soapy water to keep it "viable" hasn't anyone heard of "boiling out" a carb. That is the old way,and it works very well, then you blow it out with carb cleaner, air pressure.---lha

Air pressure can collapse the float.Friend did this to his carb. My tractor carb has been soaking in gas since 1953.
