Carb woes

My 8n ran 2 weeks ago after sitting for 2 years for about 20 minutes then quit and won't start. I installed new battery, new plugs and new in-line fuel filter. Cranks good but will not start. Has good flow of gas to the carb. but when I undid the drain plug, only 2 drops of gas came out. My question: should gasoline flow freely out of the drain plug on bottom of carb? If yes, is there a way to fix this without rebuilding the carb? Thanks in advance for any help.

Give the carb a couple of sharp raps with a screwdriver handle in the gas inlet area.

This MAY free a stuck inlet needle and allow gas to flow into the carb.

The other possibility is a clogged screen onside the carb, attached to the brass inlet elbow.

Thanks Bob. I did check the screen just inside the inlet elbow, it had a few specks of dirt which I removed. I also gave the carb a few taps with the handle of a hammer, but did not work. I took the air cleaner hose off and sprayed some carb cleaning fluid, then tried to start and it did run for a few seconds then died, I guess after all the cleaning fluid was burned.
I think I'll give it another tap or two and see if it get it unstuck.

Well first off in line filters do not work well on tractors and should not be on them. Now as for you other problem as Bob says tap n it and if that does not work then your going to have to open it up and free up the float and needle or it will never start. Not uncommon for a float to stick or a needle to stick in the seat. Oh by the way how good is the flow at the fuel line?? Needs to be like you going pe

Do you mean you have an extra fuel filter in line other than the ones that come with the tractor and if so You might make sure of the fuel flow below it for good flow. Sometimes those things look clean etc but are really swelled up and restricting flow. Devious

After setting for two yrs, if the carb bowl sat for that length of time, with out draining the fuel....the fuel left in the bowl has prob. turned to a thick or dried shellac of sorts. That would explain the possibility for the drain openings in the bottom of the bowl, being plugged.
If that is the case....you are probly looking at a carb cleaning solution to your problem!!
Not hard....just time taking!!!

Maybe you should say "like a young man going to pee". At my age and with an enlarged prostrate, mine is just a dribble! Tractor wouldn't run with that little gas. lol

Thanks to all the replies.
I have good gas flow all the way to the elbow inlet, just nothing coming out of the drain plug. So I am pretty sure the problem is within the carburator itself. I looked at instructions of how to rebuild the carb, but I am afraid I will make matters worse once I take it apart. I was hoping there would be a way to clean the carb without having to dismantle it.

NOPE.......Not if ya want to get it clean enough to last any length of time.
Cleaning the carb., is just one of those things ya have to do, from time to time!!!!
Do you have a spare carb. that you can swap out???? Are you using the "N" for anything Right Now!!!!?????

If you have not seen this already, poke the cleaning, shortcut and read that whole post. Gives ya an idea what cleaning out the carb REALLY details!!!
