Carb workaround.

Hi Folks,

I have a Ford 640 and I"ve put a Zenith carb on it. What I want to do is get rid of the filter bowl since I have a in line paper filter on it and the bowl leaks any time I mess with it. I thought I could just pull the nipple from the bowl filter and screw it into the carb and be done with it but the threads are different. I"ve been to a couple of local tractor shops and auto parts but they don"t have a nipple that fits either. Has anybody tried getting rid of the bowl filter and if so how did you do it sucessfully? I was hoping to not have to retap the threads on the carb to something else if I can help it.

Rick, I also have a 640 & had trouble with my sediment bowl leaking but finally got it stopped . If I was you , I'd not alter the threads on your new carb . If you can't fix the sediment bowl leak , find a good one & use it . With all the dirt/water we get in gas anymore & also rust in the tank , the extra protection is best .What all have you tried to fix the leak in the sediment bowl ? I hope my thoughts help . In line fuel filter cause more problems then they fix. Most are made for fuel systems with fuel pumps that put out 7-75PSI and your gravity flow fuel system is lucky with a full tank to put out 1/2psi. Fix or replace your sediment bowl and you will be far better off and less likely to have a fire problem which the in line filters can also cause. O mess with sediment bowls all the time and never have much problem with leaks. New gaskets are easy to find and if soaked in gas first seal better then if put in dry.

I have found that the cork gaskets seal better than the rubber ones.

Try using a cork gasket soaked in diesel first to stop your leak.

I also had this problem with my 640 a few years ago. the cork may be the way to go. But, I had a rubber O-ring left over from a plumbing repair kit. It happened to be close enough to the size so i used it temporarily. Since it never leaked again, it"s still there today. i also agree with the need to keep the bowl. just remember to clean out the seat before you put another gasket or ring in there. dale in va.
