this is probably the millionth question about this but here
goes, are all after market carbs made the same if not who makes
a better one. I want to rebuild my OEM carb but would like to
put another one on to run it while I'm rebuilding, just
wondering. I'm not a fast rebuilder and sometimes I have to move
it from where it is parked.

I rebuilt the carb on mine (49 8N) After the rebuild the float would stick, sometimes had to tap the side of the carb to get it to accept gas or stop flooding. I discovered that the new float was slightly wider than the oem float. In my area I couldn't get oem parts, so I used a carbide burr to grind the float bowl .025 larger on all sides. No more carb problems.

RGR,

This past June I was right there in your shoes, only standing tall next to 'Sally', my newly 'adopted' early 1940 9N.

I [b:13b53c3c47]also[/size:13b53c3c47][/b:13b53c3c47] bought a temp carb and was 100% [b:13b53c3c47]DIS[/b:13b53c3c47]-satisfied while struggling with that piece of --- Chinesium. The sad fact that "a replacement for ..." and "is sort'a like ..." just don't mean what it used to with Chinesium things.

I "Expedited" the rebuilding of the "original(ly) came with her" Zenith Carb and was VERY glad to switch back to it ASAP.

May I humbly suggest that you just stop, order a rebuild kit from a good vendor like here, carefully rebuild your "It came with it" old carb and re-install that New/Old one back on your 8N.

[i:13b53c3c47]You will be much happier .

You'll find that I'm not the only one who might make that very same suggestion here. - Joe -

I would recommend you order a rebuilt carb from YT. Once received you can swap it out and send the old carburetor back to YT for a core refund. Don't waste your money on a "new" carb. But, rebuilding the carb because you enjoy tinkering and doing that kind of thing may be the overriding factor in what you decide....

btzj,

Buying an exchange, rebuilt carb feeds a man for one meal.

Buying a rebuild kit and learning how to ... feeds a man for life.

I find that it ain't the $, it's the skill, pride and accomplishment - 'Braggin' Rights' as it were. n'est-ce pas?

To each their own, but I wouldn't even CONSIDER sending my "original" carb back for the $50 core, subtract the shipping $$$ from that yet!

MUCH better to "keep it around", just in case.

Joe, LOL
All on board with that but I will have to admit I messed up my first ever carb rebuild and lost the coveted bragging rights. Back then, being a newbie with the 8N, I panicked and took the easy way out. Now that I have become much more patient with the old girl I probably would not do it the same the next time around. Parts on the shelf? It also took me a while to recognize the value of that!

RGR,
Sorry, I have never bought a new aftermarket carb on line before, so can't help there.

The 8ns I keep, or sell,so far, have Marvel Schebler carbs.

If you get one of the $40 ones, it may work just fine. If not, it may be fixable.

I did buy a fixer 8n that had a new silver cheap one on it. Ran ok idle to about 1/2 throttle, then crapped out. It would lurch, stumble, and surge.

Realized one day that bashing it was not helping me, or anyone else, but fixing it might.

Found it was running lean due to an oversize economizer jet. Put in a smaller size, and fixed it. Runs nice now.
I still have it as a spare.

Wouldn't put it on the tractor for formal occasions, but its just fine for around the barn....
