hope someone can help...put a rebuilt carb on my 46 8n. new tank, petcock, filter, and hose...my bowl will fill with fuel, but it wont start...the motor isnt getting any fuel. it will run on ether, so i know im getting spark...HELP...

When you say "bowl" are you talking about the glass bowl or the carb bowl? Try opening the plug at the bottom of the carb & see if there is a steady flow of gas. If not, you may have a stuck or mis-adjusted float.

Well first off what do you have?? Never was a 1946 8N made. In 1946 they made a 2N but never an 8N. Now as far as your problem pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb. Do you get a good steady flow of gas?? If you don't work your way back to see where the gas flow stops.
9N made from 1939 to 1942. 2N made from 1942 to 1948. 8N made from 1948 to 1952. 9N and 2N had 3 speed trannys and the 8N a 4 speed

Try this....turn both the adjustment needles, on the carb., all the way in finger tight...Then turn the front power needle out 2 turns and leave it there.....Then turn the side idle needle out 1 turn.....Then try to start the engine. If it starts...who ever overhauled the carb. for ya, did not know how to adjust the power and idle adjust needles.
Here is a pic. to show you how to do it after you do what I just told ya.

HTH post back with the results. Thanks

Gary -

How important is it that the float is parellel to the gasket? I probably reassembled mine wrong yesterday. The instructions I had just said to make sure the closest point of the float was 1/4" from the gasket. Mine is 1/4'" near the tang, but much further at the other end. It seems like the pic I had even showed the float at an angle.

If it makes a difference, I'll take it apart and do it again.

Oops.

Joe;
I always concidered it fairly critical on the float being straight after bending the tang. I usually end up with a slight "S" in the tang after bending, so that both ends of the float are equal distance from the bowl gasket. I use a pair of flat ended needle nose pliers to make the bends.
The last two kits I bought, the floats were already set dam close to where this sheet said they are supposed to be. I did not mess with them at all, and they worked fine.

hogghed........ennytime you can't gittchur engine to start, REPLACE yer FLOODED sparkies with NEW CLEAN DRY AutoLite 437's gapped = 0.025". Don't argue!!!

Modern no-lead gas leaves INVISIBLE contaminates on the center insulator and them lazy sparkies will dribble down the side 'stedda' jumpin' the much harder gap.

Don't throw yer FLOODED sparkies away, clean'n'dry one-atta-time in HOT running engine and save'm fer NEXT time you can't start. Simple, eh?

You write......"put a rebuilt carb on my 46 8n------but it wont start...the motor isnt getting any fuel"........PROVE ITT!!!......since you claim it will run on "ether", you must be spraying into the carb mouth.......CLAMP yer hand over the mouth while trying to start the engine. Does yer hand gitt sucked in??? does the bottom of yer rebuilt carb mouth gitt WET from flooded gas???

iff'n NOT, then yer carb rebuilder didn't do his job and CLOGGED ALL yer itty-bitty jets. Take it BACK and COMPLAIN, you paid BIG MONEY.........respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
