Carberator

I have a four speed ford (8n?) with the distributor located on the front right corner. The tractor will only run for as long as there is gas in the carborator bowl. Gas flows well from the tank to the carb inlet but there seems to be an air lock I can"t get rid of. If I lossen the fuel line intake at the carb gas will flow into the carb as air escapes but if I tighten the line gas will not flow. I"ve taken the carb apart and cleaned everything I can. What am I missing?

My initial thought was a that you don't have a vented cap, but it would still get fuel into the carb for a while. I read that you should remove the line and run gas into a clean container for 30 seconds. If you are getting this, then your problem is in the carb needle and seat or jets. I would guess you are plugged up somewhere above the carb. Rust in tank? Good luck.

arbs have an air vent in the float bowl so try this and if it works it is time to rebuild your carb. Unscrew the main jet all the way then try to start it. If it then runs your bowl vent is clogged and the carb needs to be worked on. If that does not do it turn your gas off and then remove the elbow at the carb and make sure the screen in that elbow is not clogged up. You can also try removing the gas cap and with it off pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and catch the gas and make sure it flows with a good steady flow for a few minutes.
Oh by the way does it have a flat head engine?? If it does yep 8N

Elbow filter in the carb?

Carb does not have a vent cap, elbow filter is clear. I can add gas through the elbow with the fuel line off and see air excape so there must be a plugged vent somewhere. I blew everything out with compressed air and will try again. Not sure where vent is but apprciate the suggestions.

Carb does in fact have a vent but it is not a cap and it is easy to miss if you rebuild one and easy to get clogged up. Did you do as I said and try to start it with the main jet adjustment pulled out?? If you did not then how do you know if what I said would work or not???????????? Also try it with the gas cap off the gas tank. The carb vent is in the upper part of the carb and if you check the archives Bob posted a picture os where each and every passage goes in those carbs
