Carburetor headaches

I"m at my wits end, I"ve rebuilt the carburetor for my "44 H and adjusted it according to the directions. It starts right up, but once I shut it off and try to restart it won"t start unless I choke it. I"ve tried adjusting it while it was running with no luck. I can smell that it is running too rich and when I do choke it to restart it, gas pours out of the bottom of the carb (I set the float according to the rebuild directions). I"m getting to the point where I am just going to buy a new/rebuilt carb from here or Steiners and be done with it. Any suggestions before I do that?

I only use the tractor for recreation (parade, driving around town and hayrides). It will never see any hard work.

Thanks

could be junk in the needle and seat - could be a bad needle, those coated ends are easy to mess up, especially if you push on them while adjusting the float.

Blast it out good with carb cleaner, if it's in question, take it apart and do a test with the/a gas line in place to be sure it's shutting the gas off when you lightly hold the float up.

When you rebuilt, did you shake your float to see if it may have leaked? Not all that uncommon to have happen, and will keep you flooded no matter how accurate your float setting is.

Other than that - I'd say bend the float a little lower... or is it higher... ? depends on how you look at it I guess - but make it so it shuts off a little earlier. Don't go FAR out of spec, but a few hairs in the right direction won't kill you.

Take it apart again. You failed to make sure the float pivot pin was securely fastened in the float bracket, and the pin fell out.
