Carburetor Question

I plan on cleaning and overhauling an old M/S carburetor I have in my shop. I was advised that diesel or kerosene will work just as well as cleaner itself. Is this advice sound? If so, what should I use to remove the leftover kerosene/diesel? Water?

Thanks.

This is what I always use:

Especially if the carb. has been setting, non-used for a spell!!!
Works better than anything else I have tried. Here's a couple of pix of the last carb. I did for "HIGHPOCKETS":
This is when I got it open:

This is the finished product:

Mailed it back to him, he installed it and has been running it ever since.

IMHO.. diesel or kerosene will not come close to removing the deposits that laqure thinner or carb dips will..

The large adjustment screw on the right looks different to the one I have on my carb - is that an original or do I have the wrong screw in mine?

That adj. knob is an original for the MS early carbs. I was lucky enough to be able to clean it up for him, so that the needle could be re-used.
There is a part that goes under that twist knob, that was missing. The missing part was there to insure that the needle never could move on its own, and kept pressure on the knob. Like I just said, it was missing when he sent the carb to me.
The bottom butterfly valve was installed by me to make it easier to drain the carb. bowl, and that replaced the orig. drain bolt. His orig. drain bolt had been stipped out on the bolt head, so I replaced it with the butterfly valve.
BTW: That carb.(TSX 33), had been setting on His Granddad's 9N, for approx. 10 yrs, (NOT running), before he sent it to me for a complete overhaul.
Hope this answeres your ???s.

Like Gary says, use the dip bucket, blow out all passages with a rubber tipped air hose & maybe some spray carb cleaner. Be sure to run a small wire through [b:6147020390]all[/b:6147020390] of the passages.

Gary also did a carb for me last year & it works perfectly. I would follow his advice on carb rebuilds/cleaning.
