I have a 1957 John Deere 520..can not get gas to go into clys. bowel fills ok from tank..spark plugs remain dry..tractor's in time and, good spark..
any one have any ideas? carburetor has new gaskets and, float set ...everything checks..but can not get it to start..

Do you think the intake might be plugged with something?Bout all I can think of.

have you checked compression? pull a plug and put your finger in the spark plug hole and turn the motor over, on the compression stroke it should pop your finger out of the hole. maybe put a couple squirts of oil on each cylinder and turn it over a few times, then put spark plugs back in, give er a quick shot of ether or carb cleaner and see if she pops. could be the valves arent seating, maybe the rings are dry and it wont pull fuel from the carb.

isnt there a valve that is operated by vacuum to open the flow from the fuel tank to the carb? If you take the line off at the carb and turn engine over there should be gas flowing

Thanks guys..I've tried all the things you told me about..and, this is why I deceided to ask on line...
compression is 18 p.s.i. under the recommened 146 p.s.i. so that's not the problem. tractor run perfect before. so I'm stumped...

Engine oil pressure opens the valve in the sediment bowl.
It wouldn't be the fist time either somebody spun the knurled nut down and clamped the valve shut. Or 50 plus years of rust & dirt plugged the sediment bowl screen. There is a filter in the carb too.
I assume by bowl you mean the sediment bowl's sight glass?
Is there any gasoline flow from the carb bowl drain valve if you hold the sediment bowl valve stem down?
As for rebuilding the two cylinder carb? It takes a seasoned pro or a carefull person reading detailed instructions while using the proper tools.
There are many tiny passages, hidden fuel ports etc. The float has to be set spot on too. Even a seaping carb bowl gasket will cause poor running. The carb bowl is referenced to the intake manifold pressure, not to atmosphere.

Well,I dont know anything about a John Deere like you have,but I think I would look at the gaskets and see if they matched.Maybe try cranking it over a little with my hand over the air intake to see if it is even drawing air in the motor.Most likely its something with that carburetor,maybe the air mixture or maybe the float is stuck in the up position,line plugged past the sediment bowl.Try cranking with your hand over the intake,maybe wrap your hand with a rag first,and see if it is drawing air through the carburetor.

Donald, I was having a similar problem on my Ford 961. After trying everything else I put a rebuilt carb on and it cranked right up. I think something was stopped up in the carb on my tractor.
