Case 1000 Crawler

Taking the motor apart on my 1000c crawler because I suspected a blown head gasket. I took the valve cover off and noticed the a push rod missing on and intake valve. It was down in the hole so it is probably broken. I aslo took the head bolts off to pull the head. We were unable to break the head loose from the block. We sprayed some lube on it to soak over night. Where can I get a push rod? Is it the same as a Massey 55 or 555? What is the torque order and lbs on the head bolts? Any help would be great.

Why do you suspect a blown head gasket? If you replace the pushrod it will surely run better. And the head bolts, are they studs or bolts? Normally if you can't get a head loose there are some more hidden bolts down in the corners covered with oil. Does this engine need a full rebuild, rings and a valve job or what? Lots of hours? ---Derrol in Texas---

If thats a gas engine look for a stuck intake valve on that hole. I have encountered several stuck valves on engines in the past year. All were caused by sticky residue on the valve stems and guides coming from gunk solved from the fuel tank by the alcohol in todays gas. The ones I have seen, the valves stuck when the engine cooled. If they stuck open the pushrods fell off on the next startup, if stuck closed the push rods bent. The giveaway to it is the sticky residue in the intake manifold and intake ports. Have yet to see it affect an exhaust valve, but have seen it get multiple intake valves on the same engine. I've had one tractor I've been through the head 3 times. Cleaned and coated the gas tank, vatted intake manifold, chem dipped the carburetor and replaced all fuel lines and fittings this last time to try to stop it from happening again.

It is a diesel. That makes sense that if it were stuck open that it would fall off next startup. I suspect a head gasket because it was leaking oil in the water. To finish the job i flushed radiator out and added oil and ran it like that a few times to get the project done. Then it went the other way, water in the oil, and that is when i decided its time to take it apart. It runs real good, starts easy and has alot of power so i don't plan on an overhaul. Not sure how many hours, tach stopped at 3000+. It has studs, not bolts.

Herm,

I answered you on the crawler board, but
you have more info here.

There are 3 possibilities for cross contam-
ination, oil cooler or gaskets, cylinder liner
pitting , crack in lower webbing between # 3 &
4 cyl.

First question was the oil in the radiator
gray or black ? If it was black ,look for a
perforated liner just above the o rings.

If it was gray ,look for oil cooler gasket
or maybe a cooler ( rarely happens unless
frozen and cracked).

Oil galleries are tied together across block
by drilled passage in #3-4 webbing , never saw
one cracked there but it is possible if it was
frozen.
