Case 1200 TK questions

I have a few questions about case 1200 tractors. I am looking at buying one but it may have a few issues. It is leaking around two of the axle seals in the tire area. I am not sure how hard this would be to fix... Also its blowing alot of smoke out of the oil exhuast.. Is this normal? How much should it smoke? It looks like it only has 6 speeds but everything I find says it should have eight. How can you get it into the other two gears?

Thanks for the help

I have wondered about this alos. We have a 1964 (sn 8230129)1200TK with a six speed. I am not sure about when you say leaking around the axle seals by the tires - is it the outboard planetaries leaking? Ours has lots of power but it also smokes alot. When we start it in the shed (after pulling engine drain plug to check for any antifreeze) it will look like the shed is on fire. Gotta start it and get out of there. After it is warmed up it will shoot the black smoke out under a load. Ours steers hard when sitting b/c of the duals. Dont really use it much anymore, but it was our big tractor back in the day with our 1030, and 3) 500's, and 2) 830's

Its hard to tell where it is leeking. Its a heavy oil substance that is running out on the inside of the wheel. One of the tires it looks like it might be the large ball joint. The other looks like something is leaking behind that point. I am not sure about how that whole assembly goes together.

Have not worked on a 1200 but replaced seals in my 1470 2 years ago, not to bad of a job but a manual would help if your not confident to just tare into it. There are 3 seals that could be leaking 1 seal on each end of ujoint stub shafts those seals are standard demension seal. The large flange seal on planitary hub is a different story and expensive. If not avalible through case my dealer got them through the axel mfg. there should be a tag somewhere on housing w/#. these axels are very simmiler to those used on many 4 wheel loaders etc. It is my understanding that only the later 1200's had the 8 spd. Google caseih parts to find case parts website you can find a good parts breakdown there. Hope this helps & have fun. JIM
