Case 1740 Uniloader

Thought I would ask for some thoughts/opinions on a case 1740 skid steer. One came up for sale locally and has me thinking? Ok unit if was taken care of and maintained? Parts unobtainable? Looking at it as backup for handling 4x5 rd bales, putting forks on for moving things (fert., seed, loading logs on mill, etc.) . Would there be enough reach to put bale in over the side on a dually pickup? Never had a skid steer before. Run loader tractor a good bit. Thank you.

1740 has a variable speed belt drive. Can give problems if in bad shape. My BR 750 NH baler makes 4x6 bales , I cut back to 4x5.5. My 310 Case utility loader with a bale on the 3point for ballast has trouble with traction...don't think a 1740 will be able to hold the back end down lifting a bale over a pickup side rail.

1740's have a tip load of 1700lbs thats in the bucket Great Machines variable parts are getting harder to find not a hydrostatic machine direct drive sold LOTS of them New

I use a cih 695 to handle 4x5-5.5 bales now, usually don't have any problem weight wise with empty 3point. Figure the bales weigh around 1000lbs. When baler was new, and had tension all the way up, put a trailer load over the scale out of curiosity and averaged 1425lbs. a piece. Had to back off tension as cows couldn't get them apart. Baler is older, bales are looser, figure they are substantially lighter, though a neighbor came down with his "Johnny popper" last week to get one and pull a wheelie getting out the barnyard, it isn't steep at all either, almost level.

Thank you

Thank you. Was wondering if you were still around, we've lost so many over the years, always enjoyed your posts and pictures. Doing some research online and came across a calculator/chart showing how the weight further forward changes capacity. Like lifting a pallet load, the center of weight is extended vs. in the bucket. If I remember from the chart a 24" forward load would reduce weight capability to around 1200lbs. Mostly concerned with being able to reach over the side of a pickup truck with a unit like this, doesn't look like it has much reach and don't want to ding or scratch someone's vehicle. If they had me load bales straight in it wouldn't be a concern, but they want to be able to roll bales off the back now. Everyone is getting older, want to do things easier.

Not a big fan of hydostatic stuff, have had a couple and still have one. They are nice for some things, but a pain when they fail. Would sooner have something I have a chance of fixing myself, even if I have to make some parts. Have done that in the past.

Thats fine and good, just telling you as we had folks burn clutch packs on them from thinking they regulated speed slipping the packs rather than adjusting the variable speed, like I said I would take a 1740 over any hydro unit,, they will eat a 1845

Dad had a 1740 diesel with self leveling bucket. Nice machine he bought used, but we had problems with the gear box. The bolts got loose and wore the holes. If I remember we welded a new plate over the original spot to fix it. On my 1530 { had to replace the variable pulleys with those from a Owattana swather. Still have it but doesn't get used much.

I found on the gear boxes you needed to rebuild them every 800-1000 hrs, if fluids were not taken care of, run low, never changed ect, then I started setting them up tighter,, then using a High quality 100% synthetic 90wt oil they would run Much longer and not use oil in the box like regualr oil did, we even used the Special Uni-Loader gear box oil rather than 90wt, we did not sell a lot of it out the parts window though other than our shop and a handful of others, , some also refused to grease the variable enough but we did not see a ton of gear box issues normally

1000lbs on a spear on the pins will be no problem if its out on the cutting edge of the bucket it may be a little light, now one thing I did not bring up is factory counter weights on them, 1740's came with two weights in std configuration, if you added a backhoe to the front you needed two more weights at least depending on conditions it was operating on, that said there should be two cast weights on the rear engine access swing cover, you will need these to make her stay stable IMO, these units picked up far more than std counter weights would balance out, we had several customers who used them carrying wet concrete on jobs, we always added two to four more counter weights on those depending on what size bucket they had, the liquid "Mud" would move out to the edge of the bucket when dumping and cause the rear wheels to lift if not even counter weight was in place,, Trick was to not "Overweight" them either, have them like that, back off a curb or just a drop off with the rear wheels with bucket empty and in the air three feet or more and she would stand on her tail if you wasnt ready to counter act the weight transfer as the front wheels came up,, lol That as Jackie Gleason said as Chief Justice said " That's a Attention Getter" Good Times learning how to set them up for all the jobs and attachments they had available sounds like you will be Fine
