looking for any advice re-installing this pump. i'm confident the timing is good and and everything is lining up ok. i'm getting it past the two umbrella seals ok, but its the last 1/4 to 1/2 inch of insertion i cant seem to get. im real nervous about damaging something cause i just paid 800 bucks to get the thing rebuilt. luckily we havent had much snow yet so ive been able to take my time, but any day now that could change and i'm gonna be in a bind if i can get it running.

the shaft that drive the pump has a mark dot on the end of it ..also the slot in the pump that you putting it into had a dot in the slot the two dots need to line up.. if you look close the end of the shaft is tapered so it well only fit one way once you are past the two seals you may have to twist the pump slightly so it well engage. if the two dots don't line up you can take a screw driver insert it into the pump turn it to line them up you need to make sure the dots line up before you try to install it

Were the pump timing marks aligned BEFORE removal? If so the shaft dot and rotor dot should be close to alignment. If it was NOT in time, align the dots as Ben mentioned will get it close so shaft drive tang will enter the rotor drive slot.

They were. I checked for TDC, shaft gear
dot alinged with idler dot,and two dashes
on pump lined up. i think part of my
problem might be that the drive gear on
shaft can shift away from pump when that
little retainer spring compresses. im
thinking i'll leave gear cover off and try
to clamp the gear so it can move away from
pump. see if that works. i can get it all
together fine on the workbench, im just
struggling when its on the loader. thanks
for the help guys. No one I know knows
anything about this stuff, and its nice to
get some feedback from guys whove done it

I WOULD NOT remove the gear cover, pump will go on as is IF the rotor is where it should be. Remove the pump timing cover and make sure the marks are aligned. If I recall most Case 188 diesels timing is 6 or 8 degrees BTDC, see if it's marked on the valve cover to verify. If pump marks are not aligned use a clean big screwdriver to turn rotor as needed.

i think i figured it out. i dry fit the pump with no shaft, i didnt realize the brass sleeve in the pump inserts into the case that supports everything. i wasn't focusing on getting that lined up. i think ill be able to get it now. do these pumps use any lubrication besides diesel fuel? what keeps that shaft from eating up the brass eventually?
