Case 1835c skid steer timming

The original subject was "Case 1835c backfires through exhaust, will not start".

How do you time a case 1835c skid steer gas teledyn motor?Is there a mark on the damper I can't find one.And is number one cylinder toward the radiator?

The number 1 plug is towards the radiator. The book shows timing to be 2 degrees BTDC. Looks to be a cover over the timing marks. There should be a pointer on the flywheel housing and degree markings on the flywheel.
